If you think wow is an awesome game, I give you 30 days here and you'll be gone. This is way too hard for you.

Jokes on you then, i've got a year long subscription already.

And this is gd forum. Folks come here to troll so people come with their troll spray. New citizens is more closely moderated so is more useful for these kinds of topics. Or the in game help chat if you can pursuade folks you aren't trolling though I have the feeling you will be hard pressed. Forget every last thing you know about that other game and you will be more successful here.

Maxim 6. If violence wasn’t your last resort, you failed to resort to enough of it.

Hit the report flag on the op. If a moderator is on duty it can get moved pretty quick.

Hey dude,

Ignore the forum guys, most haven't played wow but know it seems cool to bash it. It is a great game, period. Most of the people here are total morons about WoW but they think they are experts. The game used to be wicked fun.

If you want to Warrior BC style (didn't play wotlk), then I'd say Drake is where it's at, great shields, good staying power, and slow to kill others, but dependable tank, very dependable.

If you want to Tank Druid style, then I'd say go Amarr or Gallente Armor tanking, the Damnation (months away) is great, one of the best tanks in the game. Gallente let you heal yourself too for decent amounts, kind of like healing with the bear.

This ^

There is no easy translation from WOW to EVE. Your best bet is to find a corporation/alliance and learn from/with them. Also the HELP channel will answer many questions you might have.

As others have said, join a corp/alliance (Eve's equivalent to Guilds). As mentioned before EveUniversity is a great starting point as they have lessons and teach you how to do stuff from the most basic mission running to get you cash, to more advanced things like invention, fleet warfare scanning and low/null/wormhole space survival.

You may think lessons would be a pain int he ass, but trust me alot of what they know and try to impart to you WILL set you up to be more successful and help you not learn too many bad habits. Another thing they do is assist with skill books which can be expensive if your starting out and trying to get on your feet.

Another thing is expect to loose your ship a lot. Don't stress out about it, we all did at the start and generally they don't cost much to replace.

And finally the most important thing you will EVER be told in Eve Online:

NEVER FLY ANYTHING YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO LOOSE.

Learn it and practice it. Nothing worse than loosing billions in ship + cargo and they have to go back to building your money from nothing again.

Maybe comprehensible but it really doesn't mean much. If you insist on comparing eve to wow your eve career will be short and lackluster. People here bash wow because even a concept as fundamental as "best" is completely alien in eve. That is why I suggested help chat might be of no use to you. Wowers can't seem to let go of ideas that are flat out stupid in eve.

Yeah, I get that a lot of this stuff doesn't apply to EVE. I just wanted to avoid EVE-lingo that I wouldn't get at all.

From what i understand here it seems like being a healer (logistics ships?) is the way to go if you are interested in party play. I'm going to google this a bit more before I go and ask another stupid question.

Thank you.

You are right about incursions though, they are a little bit like raids in the party makeup, so that may be what you want to do more research on. Maybe find a corporation that spends a lot of time doing them will help you ease into the game..

I played WOW for a bit before finding EVE many years ago. I like WOW ok but it never kept my interest the way EVE has.

Blizzard creates awesome, solid and polished games, but I get more enjoyment out of UO/EVE style MMOs with the freedom and risk that comes with not completely coddling casual gamers.

Enjoying WOW says nothing about your future in EVE, however it is true that WOW caters to a play style that isn't as compatible in EVE.

I'll also second that Drake is a decent suggestion for what you might be looking for.

Logis are very useful and loved by fleetmates but is a longer term goal. Start with an income goal. If you want to pve for income that suggests a mission boat probably a battleship. If you can build income other ways like through trade or exploration you will need different skills. You need an income you can make solo to fall back on in case things don't work out how you expect.

But even going into logi you aren't pigeon holed. The required skill translate into being effective in other ships including doing logi in an unspecialized ship like a battleship. Eve is more about collecting pieces and putting them together in a way to be effective in one or more roles. Wow is more about being the best at one and only one thing at the exclusion of all else.

So there is no low-level (forgive the incessant wow referenced idiom) group pve then?

From what it looks like there are first tier cruiser ships that can transfer shields and energy (I assume that would be the healer role), so would it be possible to go along with more dps players and do group money-making activities?

I know eventually I want to have some functional ability to solo and all, but the way EVE skills grow over time instead of with grinding I think that it would be faster for me to skill up the small number of repair skills vs the very large number of weaponry skills?

Sorry if this is too stream-of-consciousness, i'm trying...

If you're new, you may find some help with these guys http://www.eveuniversity.org/ you can also look them up in game.

I'm pretty sure the OP said he wanted to LEARN HOW TO PVP... Eve Uni doesn't Pvp - they hide behind their DEC shield...

@OP - the others have given you some good info, but here is my input.

Them smacking you and wow is like your hazing initiation and confirming you made the right choice to come to a REAL game...

Things you need to know

1) Never fly what you cannot afford to lose since when your ship goes boom - it has gone boom and you need a new one..

2) Eve is brutal and harsh - you can make friends but there is always someone who will back stab you and take your stuff if you let them.

3) Tank/DPS are one in the same since you can't have somoene blocking a corridor while your other fleet members shoot past you. Logistics are great for tipping the balance of a battle in your fleet's direction and are the only way to survive incursions.

4) Pick the one thing you want to do and train for it as you will take months to get anywhere if you try to be a little bit of everything from the start. As you pick up the skills, you will find you naturally start to get closer to some of your other "want to have" ships/weapons etc... and can then focus on the next one etc...
