Is this a relic of older expansions and doesn't not apply to current scanning system anymore? Or can you still somehow do a blanket scan of the whole system?

relic. scanning is super easy now though.

This relied on Deep Space scanner probes, which have been removed from the game.

Sigs still have base sig strength but as far as i know there is no easy way of telling what a sig is while scanning. If you scan A LOT you'll notice sigs of similiar stength get grouped together and can get a feel for it but like someone said scanning is super easy now. Most wh's are scanned out in 5mins or less and the ones with tons of sigs only take maybe 10 mins.

no it doesnt. use combats and double each number on the charts.
it's very easy to tell the sigs apart if you use this regularly.

that said, in WH space this it pretty useless, just learn to scan properly.
it's very good for kspace exploration when looking for specific sites though.

Base sensor strength is still in game but it's not worth much really. Right after the odyssey patch, the scanner showed variance as distance, ie sig stre; but that was fixed. You can tell different sig sizes via scanner, large red circle = lower sig or by turning on system overlay and doing the math for variance. k162's & all the sigs that share it's band are always 6.22au variance. Theres a chart somewhere, swift & bitter I think,.

My understanding was that a single DS probe was dropped and expanded to cover the full system. After performing a scan you could use the signal strength to determine the likely signatures in the system.

Using more than one probe would skew the results and as such for any system greater than the 64 AU that a single combat probe could cover would not be able to use this method, at least for the single blanket scan the OP is referring to.
(Please correct this last statement if I am wrong)

sure but you can just use 1 combat at 64 (leave rest small) and you get results that are stronger than the DSP results but the varience is still there.

Or if ur good at math & just turn on overlay figure out the static. Usually much faster than trying to scan every sig down.

How does the overlay help to determine the static?
