Jamming initiates huge damage

I did lv4 Guristas Assault last night in a pretty well tanked raven with mission hardeners etc. and all was going well until I got jammed by the last group. All of a sudden I started taking huge amounts of damage.

I remember the same thing happening in lv3 cut-throat and from nowhere I lost a well tanked drake in a matter of seconds.

I can overcome the jamming with grav arrays but is there some kind of damage mechanic going on here that I'm unaware of? It's like the jamming negated my hardeners or something. Or is this just an NPC-specific thing I can't do anything to counter?

Cheers in advance.

I have never experienced taking larger amounts of damage after being jammed, but you have to suffer taking the same amount of damage for longer as jamming removes your DPS tank when you can't lock the target.

The only explanation of increase damage is you drifted into the range of the damage coming from the NPCs?

During the period you were jammed, a whole lot of gurista ships made it to their optimal ranges and got out of fall off for the gunnery component of their damage, which if you are not usually jammed, you may never have felt the extra damage, nor may you have tanked their peak damage for so long.

Also there may have been spawns that do unusual amounts of thermal damage, and your tank might be biased to kinetic.

Those are the two reasons you may suddenly unexpectedly receive a lot of damage from gurista.

Cheers for that. I totally accept that as a possible factor but the whole thing was just too quick.

There were 4 BSs and 2 cruisers left at various distances from 50 - 80km. No-one was moving much but then the jamming ship (Dire Pithum Nullifier I think) began jamming and immediately everything went nuts.

I find it hard to believe that all of the remaining ships reached optimal within 2 or 3 seconds of each other but nonetheless my damage rocketed. I went from the occasional booster pulse with shields never less than 75% to having to run the booster constantly until I all but ran out of cap while I warped away in shame. Shocked

As far as my hardeners go, I was using 1 kinetic, 1 thermal and 2 adaptives and according to eve-survival the damage dealt was Kinetic 92% / Thermal 8% (heavy thermal from elite cruisers). Okay maybe my setup wasn't optimal but it got me through fine until this.

Seriously, this was a massive spike in damage. Has no-one else had this happen?

Never even heard of this.

Its either a bug, in which case try to replicate and file a bug report, or you're completely hallucinating. Or you somehow had your hardeners set to not auto-repeat.

It's pretty normal that Guristas Assault does a pretty serious damage if you can't get rid of things fast....

Just sayin..

yea assault can nuke a well tanked matauder. the trigger there btw as you probably know is if you just attack one of the bs. the instant dps spike from the new spawn is brutal because of the long range of the missiles. I have had my drones trigger it before and it is possible you were looking in a direction that didnt show the spawn.

just an idea.

Pith destroyers (is actually a battleship) have ~140 dps - which is all missile and doesn't miss, a pith eradicator has 90 - ie the variations in gurista spawns do matter a lot. 4 of them is 560 dps, which may not be above your burst, but it will certainly burn your cap tanking it - if the other unnamed cruiser was a dire pithum mortifier, then you were tanking ~640 dps counting the jammer too. You can see why an early kill or two matters a lot for those kind of spawns.

I rarely ever went into missions with more than 400 racial tank, and assault always burned caps and buffer - which is why I always had 2x my racial eccm on for that (and drones that don't care either) - as losing cap efficiency will force me out if I have to tank peak dps for any longer than necessary.

Note that my Ishtar or proteus in an orbit, will not be hurt by such due to sig, but my ratting domi regularly gets beat down by bad spawn combos (it is an experimental ship so that does not bother me, but you do learn to recognize them if you are trying to optimize the ship).
