Beginner pirate fit?

I am a new player (2 weeks old) and I've been looking into pirating. After reading some posts and tutorials I took my merlin to lowsec and began looking for someone to attack. I've only had a few confrontations, all but one of which involved me being killed. The other involved me attacking a miner who managed to warp out even though I scrammed him.

My question is this: Does anyone know of a solo pirate fit for a beginner?

I can't use any t2 weapons yet, although I am training small hybrid turret to level 5. I can use t2 afterburners, mwd's, and warp scramblers.

I am expecting to get outgunned a lot, seeing as I am so new, but I was hoping to find a fit that could at least allow me to fight similar t1 frigates or miners. I've looked at eve battleclinic but I haven't found anything that I can presently use, most of the frigates having numerous t2 modules which I haven't the skill to use.

Thanks for reading, I look forward to any replies.

The Merlin is a decent ship to start out in but it does sound as though you need to get at least a few core skills under your belt before you really start trying to solo stuff.

Those fits you've been looking at are probably pretty standard and while you don't necessarily need to be able to run exactly what it says you can use named versions of the same things to get a similar effect with less fitting requirements, making it easier for you to use. For example though, I suspect you can't use shield/weapon rigs yet. They are a big advantage and pretty much required to be competition for another frigate that is prepared for you. It doesn't take long to get them and you can easily train for it literally overnight. The upside is that if you learn to win while using low skillpoints and meta (instead of T2) fittings once you do get to the point you can fit the full T2 optimized version, you will dominate.

Secondly, for a new player letting your security status drop too low could be a big issue. Once you get below -2.0 there are systems you will need to start to avoid in high sec and the list of systems to avoid gets longer and longer until you get to -4.5 at which point you are effectively barred from high sec and at -5.0 the gate guns in low sec will no longer protect you either and you become a legal target for anyone anywhere, exactly as if you were in null sec space except that gate guns will still protect your enemies but not you. Since you are new you probably do not have alts capable of bringing you all the things you need from high sec to low and so you will want to repair your sec status from time to time to keep it dropping all the way down.

Avoiding killing pods after you destroy a ship will slow your decent quite a bit or alternatively you could join the faction war so that you will have some targets that are legal to shoot at in low sec though again this will lock you out of some of opposing empire's high sec.

Finally you could try to join brave newbies or Red vs. Blue (if they are still around, I don't pay much attention to these things and have not seen many people being directed to them lately) as they exist pretty much to help new players learn to fight.

Reality has an almost infinite capacity to resist oversimplification.

So here's a few tips I can give you:

- Train your core skills, focus train them and remap your attributes to get these up to an acceptable level as fast as possible. They do take quiet a while to train.

- Apart from training you core skills, pick one ship to fly and add in whatever skills are needed to fly the T2 guns in your already existing core skill plan. A rule of thumb I employ to myself, is that I don't fly anything if I can fit T2 modules to it.

- As a new solo pilot (I'm assuming your soloing), I recommend you get into a Condor, Missile Fit, MWD, with a couple of ballistics in the lows... that's the rough fit, but I'm not going to hold your hand. Go download EFT or Pyfa and use this fit, it's not really skill intensive for a new pilot and it will teach you the fundamentals/basics of When, Where, How and Who to engage, manual piloting and the importance of controlling variables in fights such as keeping range.

- Lastly, do not "expect" to win many fights when starting out. Your goal is to learn from every fight, pay attention to what types of fits your opponent has and why it worked etc. Eventually, when you can get into the more expensive Frigs and larger hulls, you will have more of an idea of what your going up against and how to react in different situations, thus being a better PvP'er.

Another great way to get started is to join a corp, I'm in a pirate corp looking for new recruits so hit me up in-game if you're interested.

Join a corp, even if you want to solo, join a corp.

And ignore that "T2 only" advice at the beginning. Get into PvP and lose ships ASAP. T2 Items on a frig are very expensive, you will want to lose Ships that cost ~2 mil all together a few dozen times, so you gain some experience before spending some money.
