Yarrr out to all my fellow (Likely more experienced pirate brethren),

I have recently come into the world of low sec piracy and am loving it. The thrill of the chase, the juicy loot and hopefully at some point soon delicious tears as my ships are not fueled by fuel cells alone. but i was hoping to get a few pointers, at the moment i am making some kills (And losing a fair few more) while learning the ropes but found myself at a bit of a loss once i got to the point of ransoming, so i ask you what is a reasonable expectation of a ransom figure? i know these things need to be quick before back up arrives for the target so just naming a figure right up front and doing the count down would help save me valuable time and effort.
On a similar note, pods, i know some are worth more than others taking into account implants and whatnot but is there an acceptable figure to ransom them at? or all just name a price and hope they pay?

Thanking you all in advance for your input and i'll be sure to post any fantastically whimsical pirating adventures here for you all to get a warm fuzzy feeling while i lather myself in targets pod goo.

Depends on what your killing. If your gatecamping mission runners then I go with 25mil. Otherwise for 1 mil-100mil depending on what they just got blown out of. 1 mil for cheap frigs(just to see what you can get) to 100mil for someone that just got blown out of a capital ship(carrier/titan pilots especially as they usually have juicy implants, but you probably won't be able to ransom titan pilots).

And yes get the ransom within 30 secs or blap he pod. No exceptions. Lowsec dwellers aren't nearly as heartless as they are made out to be and someone probably will show up to help or at least try to kill you if you screw around to long.

On a side note as you get used to it, you will notice the value of the implants they have are pretty directly related to the value of the ship you just blew them out of. The better then ship usually the better the implants they want to save. Its pretty close even for pirates in lowsec as even they buy some rather expensive implant to go with the faction ships they sometimes fly. So don't think because someone is a flashy they won't have some implants they want to save, but they are usually harder to catch the pod with then say mission runner strays.

I ask the mark to make a ransom offer, then usually accept anything over half the value of the hull and decline (but not dishonor) offers under that.

If I decline, they get one more offer, then it's boom.

My ransom services would (in lowsec) include the option of a free escort to a nearby station of their choice if they want it, especially if the fight crippled their ship (a Vexor that's lost 5 heavy drones, or similar).

As for pods - I ask high. I'd rather find one person willing to pay 500m to protect their slave set than ten people willing to pay 20m each to protect their +3s. Only exception is people under a week old - I let their pods off with a warning.

I support the New Order and CODE. alliance. www.minerbumping.com

Camping & Killing & Making ISK used to be my daily bread before AFKing at the moment.

  • SHIPS: Ask for about half the hull price. More often than not you get it.
  • PODS: I check ages and the ship he was flying in. Shiny ship and over 3 months old and I still go for ransom. Other than that I usually ransom even PODs that were just flying in a shuttle if they're older than 3 years. All of them! The amount of HG slaves I smartbombed with friends from dudes in shuttles is unbelievable. If you sansom at a steady 100Mill you'll possibly get very often a payment.

Important notes:

  • If the victim tells you "**** off" in chat after you ask for ransom, blap him. No point negotiating, he won't pay.
  • ALWAYS ask them to "STOP your ship / POD" and give them 5 seconds to comply. check their speed. VERY often they'll try to stall you while trying to slowboat back to gate or out of point range. And it works sometimes.
  • If you can have an alt or a buddy that can spare one slot for a ship scanner, you're golden (solo camping is something i would discourage you to do anyway). On T3s and faction ships as well as frigates you will find more often than not shiny mods, that will allow you to crank up your ship-ransom slightly.

GOLDEN RULES:

  • Always honor your word, or you won't get ransoms / 1v1s / free stuffz later.
  • Whenever they don't comply, don't think, don't hesitate, blap!
