1. are the combat styles and ship styles you want to train and use dependent on your race? i.e. it seems like i have been reading that minmatars style is projectile turrets, but that doesn't really sound interesting to me? is it worthwhile to start a toon thats not a minmatar? do different races have better ships than others?

2. if i was to delete this toon and restart on a new account, would i be able to use the name again immediately or is there a waiting period?

3. i am thinking to start a new account under a buddy invite.... there are a lot of offers that usually centre around either a big bunch of money, or about half that money but plus a bunch of new ships to start the game with. which is better for a newbie to have at the start, a lot of money, or not so much money but some better ships?

4. i really hated the mining missions but i keep hearing thats how new players make money in this game. i liked doing the data and relic analyzing parts... is there money in that too or should i just suck it up and do mining.

5. if a person wants to have alts, are there are pros and cons to having them on separate accounts or all on the same account?

1. Any character can train anything without penalties. I have a character that is minmatar but can use nearly all race subcapital ships (with the exception of T2 battleships). Also, there is no better ship then others. Each and every single ship in EVE has its situations where it is "better" and "worse" then others. Which ship is better highly dpends on the ship, its fit and the situation you are in.

2. If you biomass a character the name is free to be use again immediatly. But there isnt really a need to biomass a character.

3. Either way goes. The downside on both of them is that lots of money likely mean you get spoiled and dont understand the true value of ISK. As better ships is suggestive (bigger doesnt mean better. A minimum skilled battlecruiser is worse at times then a good trained frigate).

4. EVE is a sandbox. You can do what ever you want if you dont want to kine...then dont mine. Mine, missions, exploration, even PvP can be used to make money.

5. Same account alts have the benefit that you dont HAVE to pay for 2 subs. The downside is that you cant by default train 2 characters on 1 account unless you pay a PLEX for multiple character training on an account.

With 2 accounts you can by default train 2 characters (one on each account) andnhave 2 characters logged in at the same time (again, one from each account).

Wat you choose depends on the reason of the alt. For a trader / PI alt I suggest to pay a PLEX for dual training and train it up in a month as you dont need to have them loggdd in at the time of your main and its a short train. For things like a cyno alt you must use a seperate account as you have both online at the same time.

To give an example of point 1:

Take a destroyer (say Catalyst) and a mining barge (say Retriever).

Lets put those 2 ships into 2 different situations.

Situation 1:

Both ships are fitted and used for mining. Because of ship bonuses, intended roles and fitting, the retriever is a better ship over the Catalyst because of the before mentioned. It mines more and faster.

Situation 2:

Both ships are now fitted for PvP (Go Battle-Barge). Because of ships bonuses, intended roles and the fits, the Catalyst outclasses the Retriever and is by far the better ship in this situation.

This can be applied to any ship in EVE for any thinkable situation where one of the ships wins over another depending on the situation.

Then the sandbox part comes to life again in that you are never restricted to use a ship in its intended use.
You can use a combat ship for mining (I believe I still have a mining Rokh somewhere).
You can use a non combat ship for combat (I loved the Venture roam of RvB Ganked).
You can even go out of sync with the generally accepted rules (like an AC Punisher, so using projectile - usually minmatar guns - on an Amarr ship - which typically uses lasers).

You are 100% free to do what you want within the game mechanics and rules stated in the EULA/ToS.

Since your account is very new you really wouldn't take long to get to the level you are now with another race's ships. Your race doesn't prevent you training any other races ships / stuff, it only changes where in the game you start and what basic skills you start with (few hours training max).

Buddy trials are useful as long as you remember that a large amount of ISK is nothing compared to a good education. Ships and ISK are easy to come by with the correct knowledge even for a new player. On the flipside you could buy the most expensive ship you can fly and still die to the smallest enemy in the game without the knowledge to use it correctly. My invites focus much more on on-going training than the ISK (tho the isk is still there).

Exploration can be amazing money from a very early age, i strongly suggest you don't mine and give it a go.

Alts only need seperate acct if you'd like them both online at the same time. Logistics etc.

1) You can train any races' ships and weapon systems. There is argument over if any races' ships are "better" than others, but overall, I'd say they are fairly balanced. Some ships are better at certain roles even in the same ship class, however.

2) There is a 10 hour cool down from selecting biomass to being able to actually delete it, but after that, you should be able to reuse the name on the new account.

3) Money. You may or may not want the ship(s) you are being offered, and may not even be able to fly them right away. Generally, the ships offered are cheap ships, anyway.

4) The reason mining draws people (IMO) is that you can do it fairly AFK. Even as a newbro, you can probably make more mission running. Exploration is hit or miss...you could make a lot or make jack, especially in high sec.

5) Well, really the only con to separate accounts is an extra subscription, and that's only a con if you don't have the disposable income or get significant other aggro.

The big pro to separate accounts is having them in space at the same time, like during mission running having one kill rats and another loot and salvage the wrecks, or two combat pilots blitzing the mission faster. You can have a minimal skill point "scout" in a shuttle or noob ship to jump through gates in low or null sec to see if there is gate camp on the other side. You could have an industrial/trade focused alt on your second account without needing to pause your combat or exploration training on your main.

You could always transfer your alt to your main account if later you decide you only need one account, but this costs $20 or 2 PLEX. Depending on how patient you are, if your alt is going to be a limited skill point, highly focused alt, you might be better off using a PLEX or two to dual train on one account, rather than having a second account.

Each race has a "style" attributed to it:

  • Amarr use heavily armor tanked ships with lasers, drones, and a bit of missiles on the side, and spec in tracking disruption and energy neutralization for electronic warfare.
  • Caldari use heavily shield tanked ships with missiles and hybrid guns (mainly railguns), and spec in jamming for electronic warfare.
  • Gallente use moderately-to-heavily tanked armor ships with hybrid guns (mainly blasters) and drones, and spec in sensor dampening and warp disruption for electronic warfare.
  • Minmatar use a mixture of moderately tanked armor and shield ships with an amalgam of projectile weapons (autocannons+artillery), missiles, and a bit of drones. They spec in target painting and stasis webbing for electronic warfare.

Of course, there are always exceptions in each of the line-ups (for example, the Amarr Slicer is crazy fast, and the Caldari Scorpion is often armor tanked), but these are the general "archetypes".

Ships of some races are better at certain tasks, but it really comes down to the ship and task itself. For example, if a task requires a cruiser with speed above all else, the Minmatar Stabber comes out on top. If it requires a raw giant tank, the Amarr Maller is the solution. If it requires maximum damage, the Gallente Vexor or Thorax are probably what you're looking for. There are no overall "best ships", and each race of ships has at least one or two ships that can handle any specific task.

What many people do is specialize in one particular race at first, then branch out and cross-train ships of other races to have a wider variety of tools for the job. You can even cross-train immediately, and there is next to no penalty for, say, starting a Minmatar character that only flies Amarr ships.

I believe a deleted character's name remains "reserved" for your account for either 10 or 24 hours after the character gets deleted. You would not be able to make a character on a different account immediately with the same name, but on the same account, sure.

Money is ships and ships are money. It makes little difference. People who offer ships instead of money might be trying to bedazzle you and hide the fact the ships are actually worth less than others are offering in money.

What is better than both money and ships is having someone to mentor you and "have your back" so to speak. Eve is complex, and can be dangerous and unforgiving. Having an older player (or more) watch your back helps you not get stuck, always learn form both successes and mistakes, and generally makes the game a more pleasant experience.

If you hate doing a particular thing, don't do it. This is a game, not a job. There are tons of other ways for new players to earn a good living (and often better than mining, too). Exploration (which you mentioned), missioning, salvaging, trading, industry, faction warfare, piracy... these are all examples of newbie-accessible stuff, and there are many more things to do as you go on.

A good piece of advice: focus on what you want to do, and use ISK as a means to accomplish that. Focusing on ISK as a means unto itself (make more ISK so I can make more ISK so I can make more ISK etc) is a good way to turn Eve into an awful job. Find a way you like to make ISK, and use it to "fuel" whatever activity(-ies) you want to do which might not be profitable in and of themselves.

If they're all on the same account, you can only use one character at once, and only one of them can be training a skill at any point. If they're on multiple accounts, both of these restrictions are lifted, but you're paying more. Another account also gives you +3 other character slots to play around with.

A way to train skills on multiple characters on one account has recently been introduced, and it's slightly cheaper to do that than to have two accounts if all you need is two characters that do not need to be simultaneously online.

Anyway, welcome to Eve! I hope you enjoy it and stick around!

Edit: for some inspiration on what stuff there is to do, take a look here: http://swiftandbitter.com/eve/wtd/ . It's a little bit out of date, but only because there is even more stuff to do now Blink

Different races have ships that are better at some tasks than others, it all really depends, but I can assure you that there are no correlations between the decisions you made while making the character, and the skills/ships/activities you get into while playing.
EVE is more classless than a marxist utopia.

Highsec is owned by players now. Systems 0.5-1.0 are New Order Territory. All miners and other residents of Highsec must obey The Code. Mining without a permit is dangerous and harmful to the EVE community. See www.MinerBumping.com
