OK... so... another noob report. Just over a week into this and I definitely understand why this game has a nickname of "world's biggest spreadsheet."

Holy crap. I've developed 8 tabs and I'm thinking that's gonna double in size over the weekend.

Of course... I'm an info junkie... and I don't use the 3rd party aps (some of which are very well done) mainly because I want to create my own calcs so that I understand the inner-workings of the calcs and what not. Details details details... :D Not to mention it gives me something to do while I keep chipping away at these space 'roids.

So, thus far I've developed:

My own custom fitting calculator, modified per ship class. Still needs some twerking... lot's o detail going on but I've at least got something that gives me a pretty close estimated DPS and what not.

My own custom mining equipment calc, so that I know the rate at which I'm pulling ore per fit.

Just finished developing a start to a refining worksheet. Lots o data going on here too but eventually it'll be a simple plug in how much ore you just mined or think you're gonna mine and it'll spit out all kinds of crap like estimated returns, yields, etc. etc.

And, being a budding noob entrepreneur... I've even started my own accounting reports to track my assets, etc. with the intent in eventually founding a sprawling corporation of some sort or another.

This is great for my OCD... but I'm not sure what the g/f thinks. :P

In other news... I noticed some consistent lag around 2-4 EVE time. Also noticed as I read up on various Alliance news that it looks like Insidious turned their territory over to that big green blob over there. So... got me wondering if there's some sort of big mash up going on right now?

Developing your own spreadsheets is good. I prefer to use them alongside 3rd party tools, as they do some things better. In particular, I like isk per hour's shopping list, which tells you both what materials you need and how many components to build.

Oh god, don't do this. EFT/PYFA/EVEhq

The most straightforward things are pulling price data from eve-central, and also setting up PI networks and estimate volumes and amounts of inputs outputs, calculating times until they next need tending, and calculating values after taxes.

Lastly, the best source for raw data in multiple accessible forms is fuzzworks. You can also get a full list of items in the database with their IDs, as well as solarsystems.

Good to know. Thanks!

Ya I will likely start using the 3rd party fitting aps... but for now I'm building the calcs myself so that I get a very detailed understanding of what's going on under the hood.

Your link to the referral to the raw data is priceless. Thank you. I've been vaguely starting to get my mind around how I intended to keep as up to date market data available as possible... just hadn't gotten to it yet. Smile

EvE Online: Bringing out the OCD in you :D

Feel free to swing by the Market Discussions, Science and Industry Subforums for stuff like this. The EVE Technology Lab subforum also has some very useful things.

A lot of stuff about eve can be found out of game (dotlan, evewho, eve-central) and they can be tied to your spreadsheet or program. One of my personal projects is a miner timer and I began to understand the nuances of mining, and made me appreciate the activity as a whole. Next one is a contacts database that pulls character data from evewho, eveboards, evekill, etc. , though one currently exists in the eve technology subforum. I'll make it anyway to tailor to my needs :D

Keep coding!

edit: Be careful of programs that access the 'net, eve related or not. Its relatively easy to harvest usage data(or worse, personal data) off people. For that reason, the community doesn't use certain groups/peoples free tools. Hence our personal variants of the programs.

Thank God. But lemme guess.... you're probably price gouging for that right? I smell a scam.

Thanks for the advice all. Ya... I went to fuzzbox and read up on how to create some stuff to pull data from which I can dump into excel.

I'm headed to work now but it looks like the majority of this weekend will be spent buildling MOAR data harvesting and manipulation tools. Poor data... always harvested... always manipulated... but what does it ever get in return? Seems to me like just more fondling and manipulation...

Work. Pshhhshshhshshhshhshh. Who needs it. Well, I do... but... uh.... I wonder how long it'll be before I start dropping the "do you accept ISK" line at the grocery store.

Of course, all the while I'll be chipping away at 'roids... grinding out my very noobish but undoubtedly growing nest egg... Smile

I haven't coded anything since Basic and C about 15 years ago... but I don't see anything that looks terribly beyond reach... and it seems at first glance there are some applications that may support whatever I don't feel like trying to learn.

Funny... enter the game looking for enjoyment and relaxation... leave the game an expert in Excel and programming. (ok, maybe slight embellishment but never let the facts get in the way of a good story) Where else can u find a bargain like that?

The thing with eve is that you CAN do spreadsheetsonline , i've been playing for 9 years and haven't touched the spreadsheets in that time and that is including running 1500 market orders at a certain point Blink .

See, I've been playing for eight years and not once resorted to a spreadsheet.

Tweak != Twerk

Sounds far more interesting mind you.

Definitely do not bother wasting time making a spreadsheet for ship fitting, as Batelle mentions, simply download EFT as you won't get any better.

Also if your good with databases, then CCP have released the a full mysql database with all of item specific information. I haven't tried using it yet but will do when I get a chance.

Spreadsheets make me cry. If I can't hit F1 or talk my way out of it then it isn't in the cards.

You have a way to go yet. I have at 3 applications running 24/7 collecting and analyzing data, several databases weighing between tens and hundreds of gigabytes, and more spreadsheets than I can reasonably navigate. You'll tend to find that you need more and more data, and never seem to need to lose any. 3rd Party apps can take the weight off, as they do their own aggregation, but like you I want everything calculated personally.

Sure is fun if data analysis is your cup of tea though, eh?

Of the various witticisms (yikes... spelling alert!) This one wins IMHO. The twerk was intentional.... thank you for slamming home the set up. Big smile

Yup. And you are right... if I'm not careful I'll create my own black hole of data that will suck me in and never let me out. And as for those who are warning me about building a spreadsheet on fitting... of course you are right on. I'll eventually give it up. But for now, the reason I'm messing with it now is twofold:

1. To see if I can.

2. So that, eventually, I will develop the ability to make reasonably accurate assessments about your equipment and mine so that I'll be able to tell if I can close the, say, 40-45km or so fast enough to withstand your DPS vs. my tank until I can suck every last drop of energy out of your capacitor and leave you dead in space and impotent while my drones or my mates reduce your hard earned investment into a pile of worthless space junk. Big smile

Work is done. Time to grind. :)
