I think I lasted two weeks before my first ship loss. It was a Tristan. The Tristan is still my favorite ship to just screw around in. Nostalgia.

OP: As a member of a corp with their killboard about as deep red as you can get I will say: You can lose ships all the time, still make money, and still enjoy the game. Plus some ship losses make great stories.

If you/your corp/your alliance takes killboard stats so serious that it must be green...you/they should get a life and should not take EVE so serious.

It is a game. Play it to have fun, no matter what the underlying consequences are as long as you are having fun you are doing it right.

I do love that at the end of a night / roam I can claim victory by a green killboard but it is not my priority. I rather have fun and more losses then kills then the other way around.

Agreed.

I think the key is to set yourself 'personal' goals and targets, and avoid setting them in comparison to anyone else.

I'm happy with my stats in comparison to how far i've progressed, yet if I were to compare them to some guy who sits outside Jita pressing F1 18 hrs a day I'd look useless.

When I lost my first couple of ships, I got so scared of losing more, that every time I got into a battle i would get so nervous I couldn`t think. This of course led to more ship losses. I finally made a decision to fly the cheapest ships into the most hairy situations until losing ships became routine and I didn`t give it a second thought. The ability to keep your cool under any circumstance makes all the difference in the world.

Of course i still get a little anxious taking a 3 bill ship into battle, but I can still keep my cool now. I cry about the loss later :) .

Open question: Do you remember your first loss?

My first Loss was a basicly Equipped Maller which went bang after a sustained fight, was in a lowsec mission room with some friends just shooting stuff and bearly having the dps to kill heh.
Got jumped by the team shown in my lossmail (googlefu to chase it down heh), was a long fight but my ship & the logi that was with us both capped out due to a Curse and its neuts.

My most memorable loss was in Hisec due to me being a total idiot Lol
I was with a few friends and was doing kinda a turret tracking exersise, I was flying an Oracle which was the target of said exersise.
Locked up one of the frigates, accepted the duel then fired.

*Pop!* . wtf i shouldn't have even hit it with my large guns, woah hang on what do ya mean my security status ! ? ! ?. whoops.
CONCORDOKKEN!

I fired on the wrong frigate and blapped it and concord didn't like it OopsLol

Lesson learned, reset safety to yellow when leaving lowsec.

Edited out kill link , as pointed out by J'poll

First memorable loss was to sleepers. I found an ore site with Arkonor in it! The info tab says it's the rarest in the game! Better tell my friends so we can all go mine it in our ventures!

Second memorable loss was also in wormhole space. This guy just showed up out of nowhere in a purifier! How can he do that?

And that's when I fell in love with the unknown.

Quick heads up....

Linking any form of killmail is forbidden on the forums, this includes your own kills/losses.

There is one exception in a dedicated thread in C&P.

Suggest you take the link away before your friendly forum moderator does it for you.

EDIT:

And damn I'm getting old.

First memorable losses in Oracles and Ventures. They are new ships added after I started, already had a load of losses by the time the designers initially put them on paper.

Is linking killmails really forbidden? I've never seen such a rule.... (and don't want to!).

My first loss was a catalyst I took into lowsec to shoot BS rats in the belts. I was caught and killed by a brutix.

I'm working on losing ship # 728 at the moment, not including my 153 capsule losses.
My losses exceed 29b isk worth of assets.. youch that number always makes me cringe!

My first loss was a not needed PvE fitted Harbinger in PvP combat on 2009/11/05 18:23 hrs. Our scout reported a lone Dominix approaching the gate, yeah easy target...... Well it turned out he had a friend in a Maelstrom and they both together blown us to pieces.

Btw. being blown up by NPCs (not Concord) = you are bad at EVE :D

First ship I lost was a Vigil fitted for ninja looting and I learned why it's not good to be taking stuff while going 0 m/s

Yes it is;

Dont get me wrong. I think it is weird you cant link a loss of your own ship if that is used as an example. By linking a personal loss you are already agreeing that it might bebtrolled otherwise you shouldnt post it.

My first ship loss ever was a Rifter in the L2 mission Human Cattle, when I was on a quest to finish every L2 mission with a Rifter.

My first PVP loss was technically a Punisher that I flew down deep into nullsec because I wanted to look around--but I went there expecting to die.

My first PVP real PVP loss was a Retribution, ratting in Providence one day when a Pilgrim showed up. SLURP. No cap. No tank. Dead.

My biggest PVE loss was a L4 fit Abaddon in Worlds Collide, and my biggest PVP loss was a Bestower crammed full of minerals and 100k+ value ratting loot I was hauling up to hi-sec to sell. I meant to hit APPROACH on the regional gate, not warp to. I just wanted to d-scan, dammit. I cussed a lot that day.

Love to hate this game.

An Ibis on the way to that tourist destination B-R5.. whatever it is. I think I managed about 6 jumps before being blown out of the sky. That was last week.
