Confirming legitness. It's called "Meet & Greet". The CCP support crew and ISD STAR have been pushing forward a massive effort recently to welcome the influx of new players and to address any problems that crop up. I hope it's going well!

thanks! i'm not used to MMOs where game masters just randomly message people to welcome them to say hi when they haven't even made a support ticket, so immediately i thought it was very suspicious. thats what you guys get for being so nice :P

It's okay. A GM never messaged me, but one did message my girlfriend when she started playing. This was before I was in ISD, so I didn't know it was a thing, and I made extra sure that the text of that person was not gray/white (I don't remember whether it was a GM or an ISD who did so). It's a great sudden feeling of paranoia. A rush!

I must admit that is unique feature of EVE online

I don't know other MMO that do this.

Paranoia good. Always keep that part of your brain working in EVE. Anything that requires trust should be approached with maximum skepticism, regardless of how long you've known the person.

Another thing to note: Often GM's and Dev's can chat in a channel without actually appearing in the channel member list. I've never seen that happen otherwise (although it might be possible).

This often happens in "delayed" mode channels (especially big channels). I don't know of any other mechanic by which someone can hide in a chat channel.

I did something similar when a GM messaged me. Talked to the for a minute and then made an excuse that I was just updating my skill queue and logged out before they could scam me.

However, in retrospect, one thing to keep in mind is that no one can scam you just by talking to you*. Also, as a new player you have very little to lose. So keep your ears open but stay paranoid and not only will you learn stuff, but you'll probably also learn how some of the scams work so you can avoid them in future.

*except maybe Sabriz? I can hear the wheels turning in her head - "challenge accepted!"

Actually, all the best scams begin with friendly conversations. It's much more common to fail in a scam attempt if you open with the scam.

In that sense it's like sales IRL - you build rapport first, possibly by talking about totally unrelated things.

That said, I also assumed the GM convo was a scam at first when it happened to me (it happened to both of my accounts - the second time I just said 'hey thanks, I'm an alt of an experienced player, but have a good one' and went back to providing advice in the rookie help channel and putting in applications to corps that looked like good AWOX targets).

All in all though, no point scamming from newbies. They just don't have anything worth stealing.

Its hard for me to sell innocence in Jita. At least I haven't found the market section for it yet. Same with tears. At least those can be exchanged through eve mails though.

Have you checked contracts? I hear some things can't be traded on the market...

To trade in innocence in Jita, you can just check local.

Nice stories here but let´s not forget that right now there is a sad, sad GM somewhere out there.

Probably cries bitter tears thanks to being rejected by OP!

lol thats why i am worried about it, because i read this game encourages people to scam you and if you do let yourself get scammed you are just screwed, there is no help for you from game masters.

in any case the person was probably legitimate, cuz they just ended up asking me if i needed help and then sending me a mail of new player links then said they'd let me get back to playing. the text was yellow though, not red.

Yes, when GM's convo you in-game their text is typically yellow. It's actually very common for them to contact new characters to the game now, typically within 24 hours or so of character creation.

You, too, can be a Solid Gold dancer.
