How target painter works?

F1 - target painter,
F2 - cannon.
I press F1, F2 and then cntrl + LMB on target. Will the target painter be activated already for the 1st short? Or only for the next shot?
Is it important to press target painter button first to increase target's signature radius? Or the order of buttons does not matter?

Tracking is more important than sig radius for turrets. For missiles, which they are most useful for, flight time will let you get the shot off.

I'd rather have a tracking computer than a target painter in every solo turret ship I have.

Edit: answer to your question, no idea - they are both instant, likely a 50/50 shot of which one gets activated first. Having something targeted then pressing each one with in sequence is the only sure fire way I know.

I doubt many people will be willing to give a definite answer on this question.

In theory both will activate when the lock is resolved and you should get the benefit of the target painter with the first shot.

Speaking from a programming pov. Both commands will be processed on the same server tick. I'm taking a leap of faith here in CCP Developer ability, but it is highly likely that the server will process damage modifying commands prior to damage resolution commands.

So, it doesn't matter I pressed painter first or cannon?
May be each command has a time stamp associated with time the button was pressed. And processed according this time stamp...

It activates instantly as with the gun so should affect first shot.

Keep in mind that astetics are just that...to visually please our eyes. Just because the visual aspect isnt there doesnt mean it isnt active. The module indicator is what is important.

The same thing for instance can be explained by using the cloaking device. The second you turn it off, you are visible to others. Just because the animation still shows you as decloaking doesnt changes that.

If both modules are pre-fired (flashing as you lock) the target painter is active for the first shot.

The TP increases the target signature radius, which will affect guns as it is easier to track larger targets. The people who tell you otherwise don't understand the tracking formula very well.

The formula is here - https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Turret_damage

Against a moving target the sig is very important to guns.

Oh, I understand the mechanic.

I have also played with painters, tracking computers, and webs. From practical experience I've had much more success with scripted computers than painters while playing with turrets. Especially against NPCs.

I think the painter is active on the first shot. But the only people who could give a definitive answer to this question would be the devs.

However, tracking mods will probably give you better performance with turrets than a target painter would.

You will want to activate the painter first so that it is active when the guns fire. Otherwise the painter won't take effect until your second shot. As has been stated in another post, the target painter takes effect immediately so you can activate your guns immediately after activating the target painter.

In practice, Tracking Computers are more effective when dealing with NPC's because you don't need to wait for them the cycle for each target. NPC's tend to come in large numbers and die quickly, making the cycle time of a Target Painter problematic. The big advantage of Target Painters is that they benefit everyone shooting at that target, making them more effective when working with others.

Keep in mind that the effect of increasing Target Signature is proportional with increasing Tracking Speed. Because Target Signature and Tracking Speed are multiplied together in the tracking formula, increasing Target Signature by 30% has exactly the same effect on accuracy/damage as increasing tracking by 30%.

Both are subject to stacking penalties, so there a diminishing returns for using more than one, and you can get a larger net effect by using one of each than by using two of a kind.

Missiles damage is not calculated until they hit their target.
