The easiest answer is probably the right one, you accidentally and without realising overheated a module.

You probably shift clicked your repper by accident (which turns on overheat) and then turned it off whenever you no longer needed reps/warped to the next pocket. The only thing that throws a slight wrench is that the omni is in a different rack to the rest, so you'd've had to accidentally shift click that module too.

Nope. Like I said, overheat was the first thing I checked - and just to repeat: I had no cause to even touch my repper.

Edit: Shift click by accident? I can't see how I would shift click at all.

I don't understand how you can check to see you hadn't accidentally overheated.

Not at all. I've had it happen twice where I was holding down CTRL and clicked to target. Then clicke my weapons. In reality I had both CTRL and shift pressed (I caught the corner of the shift key). BAM i just overheated my guns.
Ok, I can see how that could happen, but that scenario couldn't apply to the modules which were damaged in this case. I use F1 for my guns and didn't click anything in my HUD between turning on all the relevant modules at the start of the mission and turning them off at the end.

If you don't know how heat works I am going to go out on a limb and guess you don't have thermodynamics trained very high. Heat damage happens very quickly, especially for some modules. Even with good skills you may only get maybe 60 seconds of heat before you burn out some modules. So at low skill you could easily accrue lots of heat damage in a very short time.
I have Thermodynamics at 4. I trained it because I've read that it could be useful if I ever get into serious PvP, but that's not likely for a long time so I've never really looked into how to use it effectively. I'm happy as an explorer, although at the moment I'm running missions to build up my SoE LP stash.

There was/is a bug where, when you first logged in after Rubicon 1.1 was deployed, you would find that overheat was turned on. The "surprise module damage"-secs happened to me in my Ishtar during my first post Rubicon 1.1 login.

Pon Farr Memorial: once every 7 years, all the carebears in high-sec must PvP or they will be temp-banned.
