It's not about taking risks.

It's about inflicting it on others. Specifically those same disgusting people who refuse to accept any of it themselves. You know, miners.

"Verily, I have often laughed at the weaklings who thought themselves good because they had no claws."

One of ours, ten of theirs.

Best Meltdown Ever.

I went through this thread and was amazed not a single first year psycholgy student took the trouble of enlightening yall.

Here's a little insight in the human mind:

1.
Ego creates the need to feel good. A very easy and fast way of feeling good is comparing yourself with those you feel are "less". This is called "downward social comparison". In RL you'll see it happening with rich vs poor, skincolor 1 vs skincolor 2 etc.

2.
People feel good being reinforced about their believes. Its why friends tend to have similar ideas. You've actually selected them on that. This group of people will look to set themselves apart and create a group of people who are obviously wrong and part of an "outgroup".

Combine these 2 tendicies we have and guess what? EVE being played by people demonstrates the same behavioral patterns we see happening in other aspects of human interactions.

So... I'm better than you cos (insert random reason). Deal with it ;)

Does anyone have a well formed, well argumented reason to hate one career path or the other?

One thing you will not find a shortage of on these forums is an argument. The more obtuse the point the greater the argument.

Some people in this game think others are here for there pleasure while others want to be left alone.

No place in EVe is 100% safe once you undock. Some people accept it others cant.

Just like some people think they are always right and their part of of the sandbox is how it should be and you are wrong if you play in your part of the sandbox different from them.

Either way you wont find a shortage of people looking to argue well formed or not.
