One fine day, in the middle of the night,
Two dead men stood up to fight,
Three blind men, to see fair play,
Forty mutes to yell hooray,
Back to back, they faced each other,
Then drew their swords and shot another.

Might I ask, what inspired this poem?

Watch_ Fred Fred Frederation_ and stop cryptozoologist! Fight against the brutal genocide of fictional creatures across New Eden! Is that a metaphor? Probably not, but the fru-fru- people will sure love it!

Four stones lie on the side of a road.
The first to find them began to speak with one, teaching it virtue as he carried it away, never quite realizing it wasn't listening.
The second stared at one for a long while, determining if it was worth his time. When he realized it was not changing, he became angry. When he cast it up a hill in disgust, it came back with many more of it's kind.
The third passed his by, too distracted by the fleeing man to notice.
The fourth found his, and the unnoticed one, and emote them together until one was sharp.
He alone had made his point.

Four little Hobgoblins, trapped by the sea. One teased a Drake, and then there were three.

Three little Hobgoblins, enjoying their brew. One bumped a Corax, and then there were two.

Two little Hobgoblins, out in the sun. Down came a Merlin, and then there was one.

One little Hobgoblin crashed into the ground. When the dust cleared, no one was found.

I like. By all means, anyone can add their own poems, proverbs and philosophies. I'd be quite intrigued at anything that turns up.

A man applies for a job with Nugoeihuvei Internal Security. At the interview the Major asks him, "Purkiinen, your credentials are perfect except it says here on your record you were once charged with ****, arson, assault and homosexuality. Care to elaborate?" To which Purkiinen responds calmly with, "Well you see Major I was once dating a girl and yes I gave her a fiddle without consent, then when her father barged in I told him to wait his turn, gave him a kiss, punched him in the face then followed with a bit of bum. I tried to burn the house down to get rid of the evidence."

At this the Internal Security Major slaps the desk in delight and exclaims, "Well damn it Purkiinen, why didn't you say so sooner? You're exactly the type of man we need here. Just make sure you keep away from the A-pop girls, matches or lighters, and only beat prisoners. Oh, and one more thing..."

"Yes?" Purkiinen asks.

"Give me a kiss and a reach around once you're finished back there."

Only when we drink poison are we well —

We want, this fire so burns our brain tissue,

To drown in the abyss — heaven or hell,

Who cares? Through the unknown, we'll find the new.

The voice that screams it's cause the loudest is the least certain in it.
That which remains silent has felt no need to scream to start with.
And in the end, only a mirror will always agree.

interesting I also heard this rhyme as a child though it was a little different.

"One fine day, in the middle of the night
two dead boys got up to fight.
Back to back they faced each other
drew their swords and shot each other.
A deaf policeman heard this noise
came up, and shot the two dead boys.
If you don't believe this lie is true
go ask the blind man he saw it too."

Interesting commonality, given that my initial effort just occurred to me out of the blue. Where did you hear that version from?

My mother told it to me as a child. It was an odd little poem but me and my brother loved it.

'Twas thine own genius gave the final blow,
And help'd to plant the wound that laid thee low:
So the struck eagle, stretch'd upon the plain,
No more through rolling clouds to soar again,
View'd his own feather on the fatal dart,
And wing'd the shaft that quiver'd in his heart.'

On my way to the Holy City I met another pilgrim and I asked him, "Is this indeed the way to the Holy City?"
And he said, "Follow me, and you will reach the Holy City in a day and a night."
And I followed him. And we walked many days and many nights, yet we did not reach the Holy City.
And what was to my surprise he became angry with me because he had misled me.

"I say that even as the holy and the righteous cannot rise beyond the highest which is in each one of you - so the wicked and the weak cannot fall lower than the lowest which is in you also.  And as a single leaf turns not yellow but with the silent knowledge of the whole tree, so the wrong-doer cannot do wrong without the hidden will of you all."

If you're not an idealist by the time you're twenty, then you have no heart. If you're not a cynic by the time you're forty then you have no brain.

I have learned silence from the talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet strange, I am ungrateful to these teachers.

In my youth I was told that in a certain city every one lived according to the Scriptures.

And I said, "I will seek that city and the blessedness thereof." And it was far. And I made great provision for my journey. And after forty-days I beheld the city and on the forty-first day I entered into it.

And lo! the whole company of the inhabitants had each but a single eye and but one hand. And I was astonished and said to myself, "Shall they of this so holy city have but one eye and one hand?"

Then I saw that they too were astonished, for they were marvelling greatly at my two hands and my two eyes. And as they were speaking together I inquired of them saying, "Is this indeed the Blessed City, where each man lives according to the Scriptures?" And they said, "Yes, this is that city."

"And what," said I, "hath befallen you, and where are your right eyes and your right hands?"

And all the people were moved. And they said, "Come thou and see."

And they took me to the temple in the midst of the city. And in the temple I saw a heap of hands and eyes. All withered. Then said I, "Alas! what conqueror hath committed this cruelty upon you?"

And there went a murmur amongst them. And one of their elders stood forth and said, "This doing is of ourselves. God hath made us conquerors over the evil that was in us."

And he led me to a high altar, and all the people followed. And he showed me above the alter and inscription graven, and I read:
"If thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee; for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut if off and cast it from thee; for it is profitable for thee that one of th members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell."

Then I understood. And I turned about to all the people and cried, "Hath no man or woman among you two eyes or two hands?"
And they answered me saying, "No, not one. There is none whole save such as are yet too young to read the Scripture and to understand its commandment."

And when we had come out of the temple, I straightway left that Blessed City; for I was not too young, and I could read the scripture.
