Not sure if this is news or not.

Hilmar did an interview where he claimed 900k total active accounts including Dust. So Dust has around 400k active accounts according to Hilmar if we assume Eve is still around 500k as per the last news we had on accounts.

Quote:
The entire “EVE” Universe claims 900,000 players, spread out between the “EVE Online” and ”Dust 514″ games.

Depends what they classify as "active" on a free game. I don't play Dust so I don't know, is there any beneficial reason to have more than one account like in Eve?

active dust accounts don't require a subscription.

An active dust account is anyone who as played dust.

I wonder how they define an "active" dust account.

Looking at eve offline for the last 24 hrs, eve peaks at just over 45k concurrent users, dust peaks at just under 4k concurrent users.

Is an active account one that tried the "free" game on the play station network for an hour two months ago and then didn't bother logging on since? The news (400k dust bunnies, 500k eve players) is of course great if true, but it kinda doesn't jive with known server graphs.

Why are we assuming the numbers are in base 10?

The article says 900k but that isn't a quote from Hilmar.

4-500k accounts for a free to play title is nothing. On F2P they reason in term of milions.
Also don't say if counting the chinese server too. And is fun doesn't say how many of these 900 are from EVE and how many from dust.

Does anyone else think about it in Bill Clinton's voice?

"Well, that depends on what your definition of 'active' is..."

Dust has like 4,000 concurrent players per day, it's really quite low: http://eve-offline.net/?server=dust

Eve has 40k concurrent players and 500k subs (active players), so I'd wager dust really has 50k or so active players in reality.

Alas, how 2 internet? How 2 internet?

There's nothing worse than an EVE player, generally considered to be top of the food chain in the MMO world, that cannot smacktalk with wit and coherency.

TBH it seems to have stabilized at 3k to 4k Concurrent players max in 24 hours.

So while its not getting worse it really isn't getting any better.

For some crazy reason, I read that as "Hitler" at first. Shocked

EDIT: Holy smokes, you can't say the name of Germany's WW2 dictator? Shocked again!

"Active" is whatever classificaton gives the marketing department the biggest number.

There was a time when 4,000 online was a record day for EVE. They kept at it and today we have over 50,000 on many days.

It's the nature of making outside-the-box games. Dust is still new and if CCP keeps improving it, it will keep growing as well. Just because everyone wants it to fail for their own malicious reasons, doesn't mean it will fail.

While I'll never play it myself as I'm a die hard PC gamer, I only wish the best for CCP to make dust live up to it's potential.

No it would only live up to its name if it was called Tumbleweed514
