Possible New Engine For Eve?

I've been keeping tabs on a game in development for the past year or so, and the game itself isn't what's so damn awesome, it's the custom engine that's being designed for it. It's called the I-Novae Engine, and I think that it would be an absolute PERFECT engine for such a large game like Eve. It would add an entire new sense of realism to distances, and even add planetary landing, that's completely seamless.

Seriously, just check it out: http://inovaestudios.com/technology.htm

Here's a more in-depth tech demo:

Keep in mind this is a pre-alpha demo that's over a year old, so it's more then likely going to be better then what you see.

Oh, and if this has already been discussed, I do apologize. :p

This thread may turn into something that you would rather it not be. ;) Thats the engine for infinity (another space MMO that may or may not be dead) and has been causing Eve-O forum arguments for a couple years now.

It's not dead, lol. Keith still updates the twitter everyday, and arguments on what? I mean if CCP were to mix bits and pieces of both engines, I really don't see any downside.

But that's just me. :p

It may not be dead but hes been developing that stuff as long as EVE has been live and there is still nothing thats remotly finished yet.

Nevertheless i would absolutly love that engine/infinity earth finished some day because it really looks amazing.

No idea what the arguments are about exactly... The threads about that engine almost always get out of hand and locked by the mods. I tend to stop reading them once the chaos begins. ;)

True, he has been, but what do you expect from just one person? Lol. He is the only one working on it, as opposed to EVE's team of how many?

Hm, I really don't see what there is to argue about, but fair enough. :p

The amount of effort that's been put into that game makes me hope that someday it comes to fruition.

That or CCP hires the guy to re-write EVE's engine and buy's the IP.

Not very impressive.
CCP wouldn't be happy with this guy.

His sun is part of the skysphere.
The geometry on the planet pops up at close range.
A year of effort for ONE planet, a ship and a station ?

There are tutorials on the net for procedurally generating planets,
for outer space and on the planet, also for generating whole galaxies (not really an issue),
shaders for atmospheres and much better LOD than this guy has implemented.

And actual suns, too ... not a bitmap.

One year for that -> fail.

2000 ships + on field... not sure. Anyway never heard of the other game. So cant say really.

Pretty sure this is the 10th time this video has been posted on the Eve forums.

I wouldn't mind seeing that kind of depth in Eve, though, along with MANUAL CONTROLS TO MY SHIP Evil

From what I've read the twitch based controls would not allow more than <100 or so ships in a fight without lag, then again I read that some time ago and they probably haven't even started working on server code from what I've seen so who knows what they can do. It's just an an engine but I must say that the infinity idea/vision is something that is really awesome, no stargates, just a ship, a throttle and infinity.

Infinity: QFE is practically non-existant and I doubt that it will ever see the daylight - considering epic scale of the game (I am not talking only about the size of the universe) and number of people that were once working on it (just a few of them I think). It's just impossible. AFAIK they are now trying to finish I-Novae and offer it for sale before someone else come up with some new and probably more advanced 3D engine suitable for space sims.

But I-Novae really looks spectacular... one can only dream to see at least certain parts of it in EVE.

the last thing EVE needs is CCP wasting another 6-18 months of development time to port the game to another engine.

What you suggest is the antithesis to all the Carbonization efforts, the UI rewrite, the effort of upgrading all ship models to modern shaders, the new nebulae, engine trails, ...

If you want to propose such a change either travel back to 2008 or wait at least until 2013/2014.

Nope it would fail in a ball of fire to due to lack of optimization, inability to cope with 1k+ retards on grid, super computer class computers completely melting becasue 1k+ players + all the ship status and weapons + now the true 3 dimensional movement with keys == nuclear meltdown.

You don't know much about programming, do you?

You can't "mix bits and pieces" of two engines. Doing so is basically equivalent to writing an engine almost from scratch.

Replacing an engine of a game on the EVE scale is basically equivalent to rewriting the game from scratch. It would take years to get it done.

Hem....actually I suppose you're not going on SISI nor that you have some GC good enough to see that what you just linked right there is total crap compared with what you, yes YOU, are having with this expansion.

Really, textures, space, nebulas and every little thing in the game is absolutely wonderfully beautiful on SISI.

Only stuff I'd like to see some changes is our UI windows info like overview etc, I've got a few Ideas but I'll wait until some dev blog pleasing me comes up to put some material.
