Hi all,
I've had this idea that you could "lock" your ship much like a car when you eject your capsule so another player who just happens to have skills to fly the ship you ejected from and "locked" will not be able to board and make off with your t1/t2/t3 ship fitted with costly modules and to reboard your ship you'd enter a password much entering a starbase forcew field password.
So what does everyone think of this idea.

Perhaps with the addition of a rig to limit the ship to your own password. But the ships in eve are made to by flown by anyone with the relevant capability to fly it. They don't come with a built in "locking system".

If they were to do this, it would be a short time before peopel would start clogging areas of space with lots of "locked" ships that can't be shot at cause they're still "owned" and the feature would be removed a couple patches later.

Besides, aside from living in a WH, or maybe working around low/null towers, why do you ever "need" to eject from your ship. And why would you leave a ship unmanned anywhere for any length of time? People could just shoot the thing and blow it up if its not in a POS shield.

Ghost riding (although you can already keep people out of it as long as its locked by someone)

perhaps it will not be implemented because we shall see increased number of locked in space ships. Looks like it could be abused heavily by spies:

  1. infiltrate
  2. fit a ship (or many) with expensive stuff
  3. fly out to somewhere
  4. unboard & lock
  5. ransom Twisted

I can't get behind this at all. The only "safe place" to store a ship is in a Station.

Back in the day, oh here we go, before Scanner Probes were introduced my Corps used to have a Forward Operating Base with ships that I and my Corp had moved to a Safe Spot and ejected from. We'd ship up for mining or combat and fly out and at night we'd leave the cheapest ships in our Safe Spot and logout in space. It was like a "car park" in space. We only had to worry about the 1337 kids with their uber D-Scan skills and that was that. We did lose them all eventually but we just laughed it off and cracked on.

TL;DR: No. You leave it in space expect it to get stolen or, more likely, blown up Twisted

That would mean no more Grand Theft Orca...

Really though. If this was implemented every miner in HS would take an orca out to a belt. lock it up, go get their hulk and strip belts.. bad idea.

I once found a faction fitted Tengu and Noctis abandoned in safe spots in a wormhole. Personally, I'm glad they weren't locked Pirate

Nope.

If you want a mining support orca, then get a friend (MMO right)... or an alt.

Also it would just be abused to hell and back. negative security people who are ganking could simply sit in their pod beside a collection of locked ships and the Space-Police (faction navy.. whatever) would not touch them.

This is Eve... there should be a risk for leaving unmanned ships in space.

Wouldn't an obvious fix for this to simply allow the ships to be 'hacked' to gain access? There could be a whole new skill tree and mods to go along with this - both to help you with hacking the ship and in locking the ship to prevent unauthorised access.

When hacking the ship you have to remain stationary and are given a suspect timer.

Is that locked ship there for the taking or just bait ....

I think this idea has great merit. Especially for capitol ships. If someone was dumb enough to lock a capitol ship outside a POS force field, well... and as for the other comments, it wouldnt stop the gankers.

If they did have this feature you should be able to hack it to unlock it.

CODE is just a bunch of pirates; smart, organized pirates. It doesn't help to rage at them because that is exactly what they want. Dust yourself off and get back on your feet, you don't even have to talk to them.

I got my first command ship like that, abandoned by a gate in null, fully fitted, so no to the op.

Dumbing down of Eve Online will result in it's destruction...

Yeah it would be viable if at the same time a Ship Hacking Computer module plus variations and a couple of skills divided into Sub-Capital Ship Hacking and Capital Ship Hacking was introduced but no supercapital hacking for balance reasons. For example you go out in your cheaply fitted throwaway ship scan down a locked ship,get within range,attempt to hack it if sucessful you gain the ship you scanned down if your don't succed the target ship goes into a lockdown preventing further hacking for 5 minutes and the targeted ship's owner get notified and has a chance to drive off the would be thief.

So add locking so that we can add skills to unlock it so that it's balanced? Mmmm skills for skills sake and to make stuff safer in space where it isn't supposed to be safe...

Let's not dumb down EvE any more than it should be. It's not a Secure Container, it's a ship.

Put it this way: If I eject from my ship with 2% hull left the ship explodes as my pod and my skills were keeping that ship alive as it added to the ships HP. Without it the ship had negative structure and so was no more. Now some people will eject with a ship in this state so now you have to add in a warning pop up stating that ejecting could result in your ships destruction. That means more code to run through your skills and attributes and apply to the ships state and then deduce if this would impact you...all because someone wants to leave ships in space and not risk them.

No, if you want to have ships in space then get a POS, find a Station or just log-off in the ship you want.

If you want to add more hacking then first should be Secure Cargo Containers...and even then I'd question if this would just put them out of use.

As to the Orca : Eject : Hulk = Profit scenario. This wouldn't work as the Orca modules would stop repeating once you ejected. It's just be a massive target for ganking and would deserve being destroyed.
