Newbie - Ship Fitting Suggestions (Cruisers)

OK...

So ive just recently started playing Eve, around 10 days now, im currently flying an Algos and a Catalyst doing epic arcs and lvl-2/3 missions and would like to move up to cruisers.

I am eyeing the Thorax which is cheap and looks like a gunship. BTW, currently I have all of my skills at level 3 (core and support) with a few at level 4, others are on the way.

If i get the thorax, I wanted to build it as a fast ship (to kill bigger ships), get in close and slam them with my blazing guns (+ drones for support), i just dont feel like flying Frigs and Dessies to do this.

This is what ive thought for a build:

Highs - 5x 150mm rails

Meds - 2x cap charges, mwd, tracking comps

Lows - thermic/kinetic hardeners, medium armor repair, mag stab (or swap to adaptive membrane?)

Rigs - 2x CCC, collision accelerator

Would this work? or should I go for blasters instead on my highs? And how about fighting Frigs, will this make it?

Any other suggestions?

- 150mm are frigate size guns and the Thorax gets no bonuses to them, so if you want to use rails then you will probably use 200mm. Also if you want to get up close and personal you'll want blasters, not rails. Generally though in PVE you're better off with rails
- I probably wouldn't fit MWD on low SP on a PVE cruiser, the fitting and cap issues are just too gnarly and you have a good chance of messing up your own tracking

You could use this as a base template to improve upon using meta 3-4 modules, it's a good start.

ok, so ditch the idea on the adaptive membrane and collision accelerator.

with your suggestion the closest i can get would be +/-10km, is there anything that could get me closer? anyway, i have no idea about the optimal ranges and fall off ranges for fully fitted bigger ships.

well basically what i wanted to do was just get in close, as close as I can then shoot them from under their noses, does that make any sense? because i've seen some action wherein a smaller cruiser just beat the crap off a BS, and to me they didnt look like they were more than 10km apart???

anyway thanks for the suggestion!

Don't mix up PVE and PVP, the first fit you linked is most definitely a PVE fit and wouldn't stand a chance in PVP.

If you want to PVE then the extra range you get from rails is, generally, more useful than the extra damage you get from blasters. And trying to orbit one big target might make sense but you won't be able to orbit several targets at the same time so while you lowered incoming dps from one, the others still hurt and since you're now close to them they probably hurt a lot too.

If you want to PVP then you need to ditch that fit completely and you should probably get experience in frigates first. Partly because they're a lot cheaper to lose and mostly because they're awesome.

Firstly; Thorax is not a good choice for L3 missions. As far as Gallente cruisers go, Vexor is a better missioner, and can run L3s comfortably enough (better tank, can stay at long ranges, can do high DPS with drones).

If you're intent on running them with a gunboat, train up to Battlecruisers and get a Brutix. It mounts a much better tank.

Also, for missioning, you're better of sitting at range with rails. Chasing down things is more time consuming, as Gregor Parud pointed out.

Forgive me if i did not state my intentions correctly, i wanted to fit the Thorax for PVP and maybe change fits for PVE. All along i had thought that the fit that i planned would be enought, and this is why i am here, to get good advise because im new at playing eve.

Here's 3 fits to give you an idea what you should be looking for. You won't be able to fit them as such just yet but it gives you a starting point. There's more options than just these, obviously.

I will still state that you shouldn't look at cruisers for your first PVP experience, not because frigates are kinda like training wheels but because they're really good and cheap.
