Why can't we customize the outsides of our ships?

Then NC. fleets really would look flying penises. I foresee many ships being refitted for bumping.

See Bio for isk doubling rules. If you didn't read bio, chances are you funded those who did.

You get it bro. Even if your joking, custom skins would really add some color and life to this game.

Okay, you're worried about nudity? Blow their ship up or file a report. Problem solved. Quite frankly the ships in this game are very bland and there really aren't that many. I should be able to put custom decals on the sides of ships and other things like that. Please CCP allow me to be an individual in this game and have a little fun with RP. Otherwise you might as well have every ship look like the drake.

Because people would do all sorts of pointless things with their ships, I mean look at what people do with their custom names these days.... like yours for example What?

Roll

There are over 53 THOUSAND people online right now and there are only about 120 ships, of which probably 50% or so of them most people can't actually fly. This isn't much variation dude. EVE needs custom skins of some sort. It would totally improve immersion.

Sometimes after undocking/jumping/bridging the camera is really close to my ship.
It's at that time i might take a moment to notice how the ship model or textures have been upgraded since the last time i looked up close.
Then i zoom the camera back out, turn on the tactical and get on with whatever i was doing.

Have you ever seen the textures on a Corax. They look like ****.

What is January 10th 1989 you birthday or something? Its not going to be as philosophical as you think it is.

If memory serves me I do believe they or working on letting us do this. Not complete custom skins but being able to to have our corp logo's on our ships and then maybe pre-selectable "paint jobs" later on.

I remember soundwave talking about that, and they want to add at least a little customization.

At least that what I heard at the time.

EVE's engine is barely capable to handle 400-500 standard ships with 5-20fps, customized hulls will crush the game and kill its main selling feature - days-long battles in TiDi.

No it wouldn't. It would just be a re-texture. Resolution would stay the same and therefore not impact performance.

Actually that is wrong.

If you created a completely custom skin it would either have to be sent from your computer to every one who can see you's computer every time someone new see's you. Or it would have to be stored on TQ and just sent from the server (but that second part wont happen).

Suddenly have 500 new ships on grid with custom skins and insta crash.

If you dont believe me.. just look at other games like FPS'ers or racers that allow for customization on that level. The custom artworks is always the last to load. Multiply that by a thousand and the system cant handle it anymore.

This is why the only way it can be done would be to just have preset selectable skins for your ship and all the server has to do is tell your client wich one to load. Wich it already does for the ships we have now.

3 or 4 selectable colour/pattern variations per faction would be nice. That way CCP could ensure no-one is flying a pink phallus.

3 or 4? That's too few. Maybe 50 would be acceptable.

I would love it if the older ship models were updated to look as nice as later ones. Some of the ships look like they made it to New Eden via wormhole from Starflight in 1987

The devs have said they'd love to do it, but are worried about the TtP factor. Also as a programmer I don't see how you overcome the issue of everyone's client needing to download the custom skin. Imagine the lag in a moderate size gate fight if everyone had customization. Now imagine Jita undock, and a 1000 ship hot drop. You couldn't preupload the skins as you end up with Gigs of custom skins on your hard drive. The only way I could see it done is store the custom paint job in a compressed db with just enough info to render the paint job on the fly. This would be much smaller, but the disk and cpu requirements to render a large number of ships would be high.

In short it's never going to happen outside of corp or alliance flag/emblems on ships. If it does there will be an option to turn it off, and everyone will turn it off.

It's simple: If too many people are detected in a system the skin reverts back to normal.
