Alienware AlienFX crashing EVE

Does anyone have solution to a problem with Alienware computers?

I try to dual-box with 2 clients and after a few minutes both clients crash, problem seems to be related to AlienFX part of my Alienware X51 desktop.

I searched forums, back in 2011 Devs did some work on it, but that thread has been locked.

Anyone else have a x51 R2 64bit machine that they use to dual-box on? Do you end up having to turn off Alien software?

I'm not sure what the Alien software does, but if it's not contributing to the game then of course you should shut it down while playing. Along with anything else tying up your processor. Torrents, active virus scan and that kind of stuff.

its Dell's all-in-one software that controls the machine - power settings, cpu, all sorts of stuff i never even looked at, and, of course, the exterior lights on the unit. I cant play EVE without my computer changing to deep green coloration for the duration of the session, you know :))

But seriously, its I think a software conflict between software that controls the machine's lights, and multiple clients of the same program (EVE). I dont think it can handle dual-boxing, wasnt designed to interpret multiple instances of same program.

I turned if off of course, but now i cant change the color of my computer. Its of course nothing important, but, its a bug of some sort.

Good to know about this. I'm personally considering an X51 myself (also looking at the 14 and 17 laptops).

Being that I was ready to pull my hair out editing .nif files I took a break and googled your problem.

Not much luck and I use a home-built so I can't test stuff for myself since it's a pristine system (for the most part) with no proprietary software added.

It might just be a coincidence though. I had the same problem until I set the game to run on DX9. I went from CTD with two clients at DX11 to smooth as silk with four clients at DX9. Click the little gear icon on the launcher and see what version you are running. If you need to, switch it to DX9 and see how things run.

I can't see why, but then again I can't see ever wanting the computer to change color depending on what its doing.

ok, if its possible, then I would guess you are on the right track with a conflict between the light controller and having it get hit with multiple states due to having 2 clients running, although I would really expect the controller to give up before freaking out and crashing an application.

what video card are you using? is this related to the AMD issues with 1.1?
if your driver goes boom, it will take both clients with it, at least it should.

otherwise I would look at killing the process for the light controller software
just because the software controls all the stuff you say it does does not mean that it needs to be running for your machine to work. cpu settings and all that other junk is in bios, so at best this software allows you to adjust settings, but its just a tool, not an active part of your machine, or at least it shouldn't be.

I have an alienware m18x R2, and I've never had this problem. Just saying...

Also, alien fx really adds to the eve experience imo. Keyboard flashes teal when you're pointed, changes color depending on your cap level, and flashes orange/red when your in armor/structure. Other effects exist too. I like it. Big smile

If you have issues, right-click the alien icon on your tray and select 'go dark', will disable the effects.

It has been a very long time since I have posted on the forums. In fact I think this is the first time since they have changed to the new format.
The word 'Alienware' caught my eye though as I was doing my usual casual browsing and I really felt that I should add my comments to this post.

A few years ago I decided after much deliberation to treat myself so to speak and forked out over £2000 on an Alienware laptop.
It has to be one of the worst ever experiences I have ever had. ( apart from a ex wife but thats a complete other story) I could go into detail but wont bore you with all that. (unless of course you really want me to! But you will have to wait until later. I have dogs to walk )

Long story short it was trouble from pretty much the first week onwards. Overheating..crashing continually. Numerous contact with them had me spending hours running tests and reinstalling allsorts. They had it back and then returned it just for same to happen again.

Eventually they agreed to replace complete machine but with absolutly no warrenty. That one died also within a few months. I could have had it fixed but was near £600 to do so.

The above all happened over a period of a year or so. ( I still have all the correspondence somewhere)

I would never ever ( and I mean EVER) reccomend to anyone to buy an Alienware product.

Massive dissapointment and a lot of money wasted.

You don't have to turn the software itself off. There is an option in the EVE settings to make the client not interact with the AlienFX software.

I got a fix! I was having the same issues today with my Alienware M17x R3. When I log on with duel clients I get a video card failure when I alt tab.

All I had to do was switch to DirectX 9 and everything works fine now. Open your launcher, open the settings window, select the DirectX tab, and select DirectX 9 from the pull down

That sucks. I have heard a few horror stories about overheating on some alienware laptops. Just curious, what size was yours? I've had a M17xR3 for about 3 years and it has literally never crashed on me. Never seen the BSD and the performance is still awesome (every game on max settings).

That being said I will probably never buy a gaming laptop again either. At 12 pounds it really is just a mobile desktop. For the same money I probably should have built a desktop for and get a MacBook Air 13'' for mobility.

And Dell still makes the best Monitors out there IMO. I have several of them including 2 30 Inch. They are excellent...

Just as an FYI, you might want to look at the ASUS Republic of Gamers laptops if you are in the market to buy. I have 2 of them, 17 Inch Monitors, I7, 16 Gigs, Highest end Nividia Graphics at the time of purchase. They are very nice machines...

I concur, as long as they're panels made by Samsung.

In which case you can probably save money by bying them straight from Samsung.
