EVE on vanilla Wine on OSX, better than the official client (mostly)

Something isn't right then, I've run up to 3 for hours on end without issues. I'll test today's EVE build in 10 minutes and see what I find out.

I'm anxious to try this out, but having trouble with the installation of wine-devel. As in, the package seems to be having trouble finding a good place to aquire the dependencies.

Editted to add: Finally got them-downloading individual dependencies for a while was the long part of the setup. Now getting Eve *crossed fingers*

Edited to add: Nope, hasn't worked properly for me. Launcher will start, I put in name and password, Play button changes to Launching, then changes back to Play, with no client launch. I'd have to try it again to see if I can figure out where it's hanging up.

Anyone care to take a look at this and point out what I'm missing? Like Mansell, it's been decades since I was doing more with computers than using. :/

Terminal code from startup attempt on pastebin.

Since reading this post, I have had nothing but tremendous success using the standard Windows EVE client under wine-devel 1.7.9 for several weeks. I have two clients running simultaneously on my 2013 model iMac with Mavericks and couldn't be happier. Far more stable and much better framerate than the Cider client, which is simultaneously pleasant and troubling. If vanilla wine can do this so well, why is the official Mac client lagging so far behind?

Noteworthy setup:

  • Installed wine using Homebrew with the following:

    1. brew install wine --devel
    2. brew install winetricks
    3. winetricks gdiplus corefonts tahoma ie8 comctl32 dotnet40 vcrun2010

  • Installed standard Windows EVE Online client using regular network installer (not the offline installer)
  • Use a one-line bash script sitting on my Desktop I double-click to launch the client: . ~/.bash_profile && wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/CCP/EVE/eve.exe
  • Login, launch game, switch account, launch game again, and away I go with two accounts

  • There are precisely two problems with the setup:

    • The well known problem with Captains Quarters definitely applies here, so disable station environment for the best experience.
    • Do not resize the window or switch between windowed/fullscreen until the game has fully loaded and is displaying the character select screen. Otherwise, the game is very likely to crash.

Since I use TeamSpeak, there's no need to worry about EVE Voice. And that about does it. I can run two copies of EVE at nice graphics quality settings with far more performance and stability than a single copy of the official Mac client on the lowest graphics settings.

I echo the same concern as a previous poster about what will show up in client usage statistics. I hope that CCP will see forum posts like this one and realize that folks generally want to see the official Mac EVE Online client become better. Using vanilla wine is not a good solution, but we are just trying to get the most out of a game we subscribed to because a Mac client was available in the first place.

Great to hear more people are finding this a useful solution, but slightly troubling at that!

Quick update: 1.7.11 seems to have borked screen resolution switching, I reverted to 1.7.10 and haven't gone any farther with 1.7.11.

I had the opposite experience - the screen was flickery and averaged a frame rate of about 5fps sitting in dock doing nothing. This was on Rubicon 1.1.1 on a MacBook Pro with a 1GB GeForce GT 650M hooked up to a 1920 x 1080 second monitor running 10.9.1. I installed wine 1.7.11 from MacPorts and winetricks with gdiplus corefonts tahoma ie8 comctl32 dotnet40 vcrun2010.

The cider client on Rubicon 1.1.1 will generate from 60 fps to 74 fps when ship spinning at 1920 x 1080 and interval immediate.

Absolutely same experience for me with MacBook Pro with a 1GB GeForce GT 650M. Surprisingly, game runs fine on Mac Book Air (Intel HD 4000) So I believe that glitching has something to do with wine+Nvidia drivers for OS X. Will investigate further.

Quick question, do I need Xcode for any of this? Sometimes packages need to be built is it the same with Wine?

Damn all I get is atrocious flickering. It's a good thing I'm not epileptic.

That being said though it's stunning how much faster to load that was compared to the Mac client which is a shame. Maybe it's because I installed the latest version of Wine but I don't know how to install an earlier version.

I'm running an Early 2011 MBP with an ATI video card.

I have been able to get around the flickering problem by the following steps...

Once the character selection screen shows up (my flickering usually starts here...) hit escape. This will bring up the configuration window. It will also be flickering. :) What I noticed was that if I changed the "Present Interval" setting to anything than what it was currently on and hit apply, the flickering goes away.

In addition to this, it seems on my MBPr 15" setting and leaving the Interval value on "Interval Two" seems to get rid of the flickering for good.

What was odd, was things worked well for sometime before the flickering started. I don't believe their was an Eve update or Wine update or Mac update that preceded it. Maybe I missed something? Anyway, the above fixed the flickering for me.

Unfortunately, after todays Eve update (v8.41.712925) my screen is not updating correctly. The character selection screen is borked and once I'm in game I can't seem to get the left menu bar to stay on screen. It only shows up for brief instances when I move my mouse over it.

I was hoping a wine update might help (I'm on 1.7.10 now), but it sounds like there are different issues with 1.7.11. Please post updates. Now that I've been running on wine for awhile I don't really want to go back to cider... :)

I can also confirm having issues since the update today. Character selection screen is mostly black, and all textures including what you see when you disable station environment are either black or transparent.

Currently trying to figure out a solution. Will post updates when I find something.

This is a known issue with Wine after the last patch.

The latest patch fixes the issues noted so far, but a new one has cropped up on my setup. Currently, resizing the window, dragging it to a different monitor, or changing the window mode causes an immediate crash.

I do not know if this is to be blamed on upgrading Wine to 1.7.11 or the patch. Investigation shall continue.

Edit: Output generated by running the game pasted here: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/8887929
This is after logging in, starting the game, waiting for the character select screen to fully load (including the little banner ad at the bottom), and finally attempting to resize the window.

See https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=4210469#post4210469 - apparently this was fixed in Wine 1.7.12.

    Hi,

I am extremely satisfied with running game in Wine - on late 2013 rMBP with Nvidia discrete graphics it changed from unstable 20 FPS on mid detail and running very hot (100C) to stable 30 FPS on max details at around 70C.

Also UI feels VERY responsive in contrary to what I experienced with Cider version - no more drag lagging and browsing Market and ISIS is much faster overall. Also, swapping windows by Command-Tab is instant.

That being said I have some really minor issues:

    • Problems with receiving Ctrl-F# keybindings
    • Not working Alt key (CMD instead forks like alt)
    • Cannot make it work with Mumble overlay (which I was using)

Not game-changing by any means but if someones stumbles upon solution to any of above let me know.

Has anyone tried this on a mac with the "black screen"-problem in EVE? I am currently unable to login to eve on my mac, at all. Would be great if running it with wine would fix the problem. Has anyone tried?

I was hoping someone could update the thread with this. I don't want to have to bootcamp my mac with windows if I can help it just for eve.
