When it comes to laws and rules there are two extremes you need to avoid. Too vague and people will be unsure of how to follow them or it can be abused by those who wish to find a reason to get rid of someone. Too specific and people will find ways around them and will be difficult for the common person to comprehend and thus obey.

I feel the rules set by EM are too vague. For example, support of political enemies. Could I get flagged for having tea with an Amarrian friend? Would I be considered hostile if I invested money into an Amarrian (non military) corporation? While the rule certainly covers a lot of crimes, it does leave a lot of ambiguity and thus room for mistakes and abuse.

It is probably similar to most capsuleer corporation rules, in that their execution is at the discretion of corporate leadership. Which, in essence, makes sense. It does mean laws are vague, but it also means they can be ignored. The entirety of a corporation relies, then, on the good judgment of the arbiters. Which, I suppose wouldn't be a system any common Amarrian would necessarily fault. It isn't as if there is a common court of appeals you could lobby on a technicality in your average corporation.

I suppose we can just assume that if you are going to end up being disliked as a matter of policy, you are going to be disliked as a matter of policy. There's not much point in trying to change those discretionary policies, you shall either be red or you shall not.

The "support of political enemies" clause has mostly been used against corporations/alliances offering direct support to Amarrian military organizations such as CVA or the Militia. You will most likely not be redded for having tea with anyone, or peaceful investments of any kind. If you wish to make sure before taking a particular action, feel free to consult us via evemail.

That said, Gradient does not owe any explanation or explicit set of rules about how we set standings to anybody outside the corporation any more than any other capsuleer organization. We offer the guidelines because we want to, as a service to those we deal with. Polite questions about them are fine, of course, but I don't, frankly, give an effing damn whether you think the rules are "too vague" or if they "should" be this or that.

If you want a better set of standings rules, feel free to make one for your own corporation.

Ms. Rhiannon,

While we may today nominally be political enemies (no doubt, given the present discourse my organization may be set to negative standings by yours due to our history and clients) I can reserve nothing but admiration for your display of proper corporate gravitas and authority in addition to the succinctness and directness in which you framed your thoughts.
