So, reading through the Reddit threat on the recent B-R mega battle got me interested in this kind of fun. I'm a player since 2009 but have pretty much avoided PvP due to the economics of my player. Still, that didn't stop me from training up some decent Battleship SP alongside my mining stuff.

My questions are these:

How easy is it to get involved with these megafactions?
If I fly their Fleet orders, do they provide the ships or do I?
Apart from random skirmishes and/or epic saga battles, what else am I doing if I am associated with such a faction?

Lastly, who do I contact about seeking to join them?

My interests are just in having fun, burning time, and forgetting that I fly a cube for a living (even though I own it).

I'd recommend you start by joining a factional warfare corp (Red Vs. Blue = just pointless highsec warfare with no actual benefit to the player).

Learn to PVP well in very small ships (Friggies and Dessies) and work up from there.

I would suggest you join Goons, just contact a recruiter and he'll set you up. Free ship replacements, and lot's of 10% TiDi fun to be had!

Simple really. Train to fly an interceptor and fly to any of the nullsec gates. Should not be hard to find and start blapping away. Brave Newbies come to mind as a logical first step. But if you have decent skills in assorted craft like bombers and other stealth stuff you should easily find a home in null. Just never take anything that you cannot afford to lose into null. Trust no-one and. There are plenty of corp recruitment threads. Find one that is in null and fits your style of play.

PvP in EvE is up to you on what you decide is PvP. Clarification, there are people who call PvP in EvE when they have a group of friends/corp/alliance pilots that they are flying with that out number the enemy group... Heavily out number. this is called Blobbing and is a easy way to get lots of kills and have fun but teaches you NOTHING about how to PvP solo or in small groups. Small gang PvP is usually 3-10 pilots flying together with no logistics and looking to fight groups of other players or just one player that they can take down at ease. This teaches you a lot of ship flying and is fun but can end badly if you have a run into with a blob. Solo PvP in EvE is found mostly in High-Sec space by the 'Duel' option that allows two pilots to fight each other. This is becoming more and more rare and is one of the hardest forms of PvP if both pilots are aware of the mechanics that run this game. I learned PvP in front of Dodixie station getting my a** handed to me by Axel Gray who was on the top 10 in Battleclinic killboards with 0ver 90% of his kills being 1v1 frigate fights. Most people here are saying RvB and I agree that they will provide you with a great amount of PvP and fun. EvE University is another good option with more ways to advance you're abilities on the mechanics of PvP. Don't start with Cruisers and Battleships! Use T1 Frigates with basic T2 fittings that you can find on Battleclinic and go out side Trade Hubs (Not Jita) and look for other ships in the same class as yours and ask for a duel, you will lose a LOT but you will learn more that way then blobbing people and never losing at all. One day if you are persistent you will start winning more then you lose. Good hunting and fly dangerous!

I'm currently trying to organize a casual PvP tournament, if you're into that sort of thing. T1 frigates, nothing expensive. It's a practice/newbie/casual/fun oriented sort of thing.

Quite easy but like anything else don't expect to start at the top. More likely than not you will start in some scrub renter alliance vaguely associated with another alliance that falls under the protection/responsibility of a coalition member founded by one of the mega-alliances. I hear you can get into goons right away with 500M isk or so, but I may be mistaken. But everyone else will avoid you because you are probably a spy.

Once you're in one of these backwater alliances you have to go constantly above and beyond the call of duty, making yourself available for important ops at inconvenient times and actually making a difference. Then you get noticed by people higher up the food chain and are invited to join/are poached when your previous scrub friends disband and go back to care-bear space where they belonged. Rinse/repeat until you sit on some important decision-making body a few years down the road.

The way to success in EVE, just like in real life, is through a) ass kissing and politics b) nepotisim and lastly c) having actual skill (although this one is not absolutely required).

Most alliances provide the ship doctrine. You are required to have the skill to buy and fit your ship in the alliance approved manner. If you don't have the money or skill what use are you? Many alliances expect you to have several different ships and several types of ship, as doctrines can vary daily and even in the middle of a fight. HOWEVER, the large alliances do take care of their own (usually) and replace ship hulls that are lost in official alliance ops providing you were doing as you were told.

Your time depends greatly on which alliance you fly with and what your corp CEO's attitudes are. Some CEO's have strict orders to maintain certain killboard stats and you will find yourself kicked if you start affecting the killboards in a negative way OR if you don't contribute enough to the positive end of the killboard. Others are more relaxed and will even allow you to go around care-bearing as much as you want. During scheduled alliance/coalition OPs however you are required to participate and you can expect to be killed and kicked if you are caught doing "other stuff" like ratting/mining etc during official ops. How often these CTA's or alliance ops happen depend on the particular military situation, the strategic goals of the alliance and the size of the alliance.

Alliance ops are fun, it's nice to watch a couple dozen supercaps jump in and pound a station in minutes that you know would take your sub-cap fleet hours to do. It's nice to fight in the big battles and be "part of something", being in a teamspeak channel with hundreds of others and not a single word is being spoken, flying with a disciplined fleet, etc. But that is merely one style of PvP. Solo you vs the world PvP can be equally thrilling, it is certainly more challenging to be successful at it. And finally small gang PvP, while very hard to achieve, is to my mind the most fun - because you're with a small group of friends you trust, you know their abilities, sometimes they save your arse, sometimes you save theirs, comms are much more free, you can be creative with tactics, etc.

All styles of PvP have advantages and disadvantages, none are "better" than the other, all are fun when you win and most are fun when you lose. The important thing is to stick with it. PVP happens quickly and it takes many, many engagements just to understand what is happening let alone figuring out what you are doing wrong. But eventually you start getting the hang of it. I'm not "good" by any means, but I'm certainly better than I was. It's all about perseverence.
