The o7m8 t-shirt - interested?

There was a good discussion about player-made Eve themed shirts on Reddit, so I petitioned to see what the deal was.

CCP Eterne responded with a quite clear and sensible answer:

1. Do not make money from it
2. It must be limited quantities

with a probable implicit third point: “Keep it classy and don’t rip off our IP”.

So, I erred on the side of caution and made this t shirt just to see what interest there is.

link to the shirt's campaign:

The shirt will only be made if the goal of 50 orders is reached in the next eight days. If not, everyone's money will be refunded automatically.

As per CCP's stipulation, I make no money from this. In fact, if you want to make your own shirts with eve-related sayings (I'm sure the brave newbies would go for a 7o shirt), go ahead. There's a FAQ here.

So yeah. If you'd like a shirt like this, feel free to put your name down here.

Maybe during the few weeks I took away from the game I missed something epic, but how is o7 m8 EVE specific?

You still didn't explain how. Also publords use this is most games now, so you'll need a really good explanation.

It's common knowledge that o7 and m8 together gained popularity in Eve.

Some hints include: searching for o7 m8 shows pages upon pages of eve-related stuff going back to 2008 or earlier, yet nothing for other games. For bonus points urban dictionary's entry for 07 was created in 2007 by someone called Amarr_titan. I could go on, but I won't.

Perhaps you could meet me halfway and provide evidence that 'publords use this is most games now' (sic).

While I like the idea the sad truth is anyone could go to a handful of online custom shirt companies and make a one off of this just for themselves. So yea it's cool, if you like it just make one and wear it man. Hope you run into someone who gets it and gives you a smile.

So what?

That is not at all part of CCP's IP and there is no way they can prevent you making a profit on those shirts if you wanted to turn this into a business.

o7 is a salute. It's common to combat flight sim forums and probably originated with them. I've been using it since 2001 but it's certainly older than that. m8 has been around longer still.

Just because it is associated with this game due to the fact that flight sims are even more niche than internet spaceships does not in any way mean that it originated with this game. It's a common internet salutation and as such can be freely used on any property you choose. Like lol or hai, no one owns it.

However, you will have at the very least GW and WOW boys giving you the nod as you pass them on the street. You'll be much more likely to run into one of them than one of the 300k EVE players.

Put a Rifter or the Caldari logo on a shirt if you want to make a statement, not o7m8 that is used everywhere by everyone.

Fortunately for you, that shirt is not eve specific, and CCP holds no claim over the letters "o" and "m" or the numbers "7" and "8"... Or the color black.

So, I guess the only hing that could happen if you made money out of that shirt is that this thread ghets locked because you'd be advertising a product that does not belong to CCP in GD.

Stupidity should be a bannable offense.

Fighting back is more fun than not.

It is perfectly ok to make money selling CCP's images on shirts... with conditions...

In fact, you should have been refered to the official CCP webpage that talks about this.

The condition is you can't just decide to do it on your own. They are willing to work out licensing deals for anyone who is serious about it as a business venture. I'm on my phone, so finding it and linking is too cumbersome to bother with. There are already companies doing this that are linked right from this website, that have, worked out deals.

See Bio for isk doubling rules. If you didn't read bio, chances are you funded those who did.

Just make the damn shirt, anybody who tries to claim ownership of o7m8 is going to get their butt ripped off in court.
Good gravy people are scaredy little hungry ghosts these days.
Not that you'd see me wearing an injoke slogan tee. Only people who'd understand it are maybe two busloads of neckbeards out of the 6m locals in my town.

This is like those folks who go " [insert MMO] is a WOW clone", pretty much disregarding the fact that WOW didn't invent anything new.

Great! So now we can put a Fedora on a T shirt, and I can wear a Fedora.... on my shirt!

your CCP contact is clueless about copyright law

07 m8 is not licensed by anyone
"eve" is only licensed if its an official logo or can be recognized as something specific to the game and IP, otherwise the authors of Genesis are in some deep doo doo, as well as the makers of a line of feminine hygiene products.

Never ask creative about legalities

if you have a real concern ask legal or consult your own lawyer
