Hello everyone,

I want to try myself in planet mining, and would like to ask some questions.

The most important of them - how much money I'll need for this?

My goal is to mine tier 2 materials required for tier 2 ships, mostly photon microprocessors needed for hulks and mackinaws. I already figured that I need the largest station possible, any smaller won't have enough power and cpu. My calculations in excel show that I'll need about 300 millions for all needed arrays and reactors. This however, don't include weapons, I don't have the slightest idea what defenses I'll need and how many. So, this is my second question.

My calculations about fuel show that I'll need about 17.5 mils isk per day (Caldari Tower). Is it correct? How often do you recommend to load the station with fuel?

And finally, what additional modules (like research labs etc) you'd recommend to build?

For now I have about a billion of isk. Is it worth a try starting?

before you get too carried with planning, you should make sure you can find the right moons and that they are available.

Thanks for advice. And I also forgot to ask - can anyone link me information what tier 2 mats used for?

Ballpark figures...

Large towers in dangerous areas typically cost about 600-700M ISK for the tower + hardeners + weapons + e-war modules. That's 200M for the tower, plus about 80-120 defensive modules. More then that if you decide to go faction.

Then add arrays (CHA, labs, silos, etc) on top of that (figure 10-15 arrays @ 50M each).

You'll need at least 1 month of fuel to get started - 400M, and having 2 months worth ready to go would not be a bad idea.

For the guns, you'll need 100-300M ISK worth of ammo.

You'll need about 50-100M in stront.

Plus the ability to haul about 600-800k m3 of stuff to the destination over the first few days.

I wouldn't recommend trying to get into moon mining. First off you can't mine in a system higher than 0.3 security rating. Secondly, any moons that have a way to turn a decent profit are already being mined by large corps/alliances that will not hesitate to take your POS out as soon as they see it. I'm not saying it isn't impossible to do, buy it won't be easy and you will most likely lose a TON of isk and time.

If you still feel like its something you want to pursue: http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Moon_mining

^^ This

If you set up a POS in space claimed by a group they may kill your tower just cus they don't want it their.

I've moon mined with a medium POS before. But had no defences cos I figured if someone wants to take it down they will. She stood strong for 6 months until I took it down. But the trick was that I put it up in a militia conflict zone, so the system was busy but not with people who were interested in POS bashing. Never saw a single cyno ;-)

I am not too familiar with moon mining. The one thing that I understand, and correct me if I am wrong, is that moon mining is similar to PI with respect to the extracting and combining. For example, you can have moons (with POS) that mine materials and at the same time have moons (with POS) that do complex reactions.

That being said, it MAY be profitable to pick a moon in low sec, but near high sec trading hub like Jita, that you buy the basic moon materials, transport them to the moon factory POS, and then haul to back to the hub and sell for profit.

I ...assume...that is the best way to go for a small operator. I havent tried it myself, but I am thinking of going that way myself at some point.

Yeah, you could set up a reaction tower, but the general problems of setting up a tower (space is usually occupied by larger entities that have uses for the moons) still apply. Also, you're dependent on the prices of the input materials to stay profitable. Instead of looking at whether or not the total value of your outputs is more than the fuel cost of the tower, you now are including the costs of raw materials being thrown into the tower, which can eat a huge hole in your margins.

I'm sure someone's made a reaction spreadsheet, though, so you could just go through that and decide what's worth running.

You also need a way of safely moving large quantities of materials. So in other words, you need a jump freighter, a little covops transport would be hell to deal with.

If you only have 1 bil your better off doing something else. Like investing in a stealth bomber and going ratting. Or doing station/region trading.
