I've recently renewed my sub after a lengthy absence, and I never got very far in the game to begin with. I still remember the basics; how to navigate, how to mine, etc. and I would like to get back into running missions for awhile.

I've done some basic missions, but before I left I joined a corp and moved halfway across the galaxy for them. Now that I'm back, assuming I won't be running with them, what would I do to start fresh? Do I pick up and move back to my original system? Does it matter what galaxy I move to for missions? Or should I just join another corp and move to their system?

Go to one of the 12 Rookie systems and do the missions Aura gives to you.

https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Rookie_Systems

Then finish the tutorial missions, there are 50 of them, Aura will guide you to them.

Once you are done with those go to the sisters of eve and do their missions.

-

Once you are done with all of this, you will have a firm understanding of mission running, you should have a destroyer or even a cruiser and you should be able to fly lvl 2-3 missions.

Once you can fly battlecruisers (with their appropriate skills) you might try lvl 4s.

Of course if you are good you can fly lvl 4s in cruisers etc.

-

You might want to join Eve Uni, or Red vs. Blue or Brave Newbies. They are player friendly corps.

First make up your mind on why you resub. Then find a corporation that does what you wanna do, pvp, pve , sov, ... And enjoy :)

Think of missions as a means to an end.

For some people, the goal is ISK to use in PVP. For others, it's to build standings. For others, it's to see the variety of PVE content that exists in the game (hint: it's not all that much, you'll be repeating missions soon and at that point you will want to try other types of gameplay in EVE or you will get bored and quit).

For me, it's a way to regain security status lost from suicide ganking in highsec.

I suggest you try a few things on the side while you keep running missions. Suicide gank an autopiloting pod (something an inexperienced player can do in a Thrasher with six autocannons). Run exploration sites, both the combat and the non-combat ones. Fit out a ship you don't care about losing and venture into lowsec or even wormholes looking for trouble. Try to find a profitable trading niche. Join a corp that does PVP roams. Join a corp that does mining operations and bring a combat ship, then turn their mining op into your own personal PVP roam. Build ammo and see whether you can sell it for a profit or not (hint: you probably can't, but it's a worthwhile learning experience).

In short - try everything. You will find missions more interesting if you have a goal to running them.

Missions are indeed only a means to an end.... An end to your subscription! Boooooring!

Heh, I'm joking of course... Well... Except that I do find it quite boring, and that statistically people who don't branch out of mission running tend to un-sub!

But the above two posters are correct. You've got to try out new stuff, and develop an idea of what you'll enjoy in the sandbox.

For most people, this also is tied closely to the group of people you hang out with. Playing alone is rather terrible. So indeed, once you think you've got a basic grip on the game in high-sec, you'll probably be better off joining a corporation sooner than later.

What I don't suggest is waiting until you have a certain threshold of SP, or personal experience in a given topic, such as PVP or Low-Sec/Null-sec. There are so many facets to this game that you'll never run out of important factors to learn. And for so many of these factors, it depends highly on trial and error, and not how many forum, wiki, and blog posts you've read in preparation. The time is now, it's always now. You'll never be ready; you're always ready.
Pick a direction, and go.

Granted, that first part is kinda tough to wrap ones head around. =)

All great suggestions, except one. Doing lvl4's in a battlecruiser is only viable if you have a lot of time at your hands, an awful lot that is. Doing it in a cruiser is a good way to get blown up... unless it is a HAC or strategic cruiser, that is.

But yes, this point cannot be stressed enough: find a bunch of like-minded people and hang out with them. It really adds to the enjoyment of the game the knowledge that you won't be alone and will have someone to chat to, fly together with, etc. no matter how boring is the content you're playing.

and, do COSMOS. PvE doesn't get better than that imho.

Need more well-formatted linking.

Nonsense, unless you clarify with the following: If your goal is to maximize ISK per hour (by minimizing risk), then doing level 4 security missions with a cruiser or battlecruiser is not the way to go.

Yes, doing a level 4 in a cruiser will take a lot of time. And it won't be easy. But it is absolutely doable. I do it in a T1 cruiser (Thorax) on a 4M SP character with Meta 4 equipment.

I play for fun, and if it's not a challenge, it's not fun. Plain an simple as that. I don't give a hoot if my ISK per hour sucks, I already have enough ISK to buy and fit dozens of T1 Cruisers. So as long as my ISK goes up in the long run, I'm succeeding AND having fun.

The problem with PVE content and the PVP elites that poo poo it constantly, is they only see it as a grind completed with ships that have almost zero chance of failing, short of a monumental derp.

Just returned myself after a 6 year hiatus. My how somethings have changed, some good info in this thread. I'll be looking to PvP hopefully when I'm feeling not so overwhelmed. Crappy thing is a lot of my good ....well what used to be good (BS,intys, tech II stuff et al) is all in "owned" 0.0...should be interesting trying to retrieve or figure out what to do with it.

If the account has been inactive for 6 years, you can ask CCP for a move.

What this means, you get in a ship, and that ship + all cargo that it's currently holding, will get moved to a more "safe" location.
Just keep in mind, it's a one time deal only, so pick your ship and pick what you stash in it's cargohold.

As for OP:

So, you on your own decided to resub for the game, yet need to ask others what to do.
May I ask why you resubbed in the first place then if you had no idea what you were going to do in the game?

Maybe I phrased it wrong. I'm not asking what should I do as in "why am I playing the game?" I'm asking what's the best thing to focus on at the moment to get on my feet.

This game isn't as linear as other MMO's, there's no guiding light to point you in the right direction. I just want to know what activity would be most beneficial for my character's development right now.

Many ppl seem to forget, that Mission running is not only to grind ISK.

If you want increase Standings with a Faction or Corp, you need to run missions.
And there are lot of reasons to increase the Standings (Jump Clones, lower the refining and production fees,
wish to join FactionWar, etc., etc.)

It dosen't really matter in which area you run missions, Pickle.
Here we had a topic about which corp to run missions for some days ago. To join a Mission runner corp is not a bad idea too.

The best thing to focus on is to have fun. Learn skills to be able to do the stuff you like to do.
If you are the social type, find corp with lots of people, if you are happy on your own find a goal to work towards to.
If you like to fly missions do that, if you like to PvP do that.

If you don't know what to do check this out:
http://swiftandbitter.com/eve/wtd/

For example friend of mine is an industrialist, who has huge spreadsheets and creates T2 items all day long, another friend is in lowsec FW and plays PvP all the time, with a profit. A famous blogger is maintaining a lowsec shop, where she sells everything, buys everything resells and resupplies in jita, with a hug profit.

Someone else is in null sec and hunts rats, untill the cta comes and than flies to defend his home base. Another one is making moon goo, or does PI, another is a freighter pilot... etc.

You should find out what you like in eve and do that.

I'm a miner for example. *hides from gankers behind a roid*

And that's a "wrong" question, because we CAN NOT answer that for you.

As every single player you will meet, is different, this means every single player in EVE will have other goals and approaches things differently.

And thus NOBODY can tell you how to play the game, as they are not you. The only person who can answer that question is you.

The moste beneficial thing to work on is the thing you want to do. If you do not know what you want to do, join a corp that does a mixture of activities and try things out. Also, as mentioned above, join one of the corps that do classes on aspects of eve.
