Hello I was wondering if I can turn off the text that shows up next to a target in space? Like if I look at a stargate, I see the icon with the name of the stargate next to it, also the distance. I just want it to not tell me the name. If this is possible please let me know.

I believe that you would have to change the 'ShipLabels' and get rid of the type. Although this will effect everything.

How would I go about doing that? I'm still fairly new. Also what all would it effect?

Sorry I didn't quite read your post correctly. It cannot be done for lets say stations or what not, it can only be applied to ships.

The way I understand the question it's not about the overview but about the text tag that appears when you hover your cursor over a bracket in space. As to my best knowledge those text tags are not customizable at all, the only thing you can do is set up a bracket profile (similar to overview profiles) to choose which kinds of brackets should show up in space.

Will it hide all the tags?

Well, as I said you can choose which kinds of brackets (= icon symbols) you want to have in space, but yeah, if you remove the bracket of something then you can't mouseover the bracket, so there won't be a text tag (unless you click on the item to select it which automatically creates a selection bracket which also has a text tag on mouseover).
