Ishtar. Passive or active tank?

I'm just about to get an Ishtar. I have been using an Ishkur for ratting and combat sites but I want to take on the big boys so I am moving up.

Does anyone have any suggestions as how to tank this ship?

Do I use shield boosters and reps or do I go for armour plates?

I prefer to stand off and snipe whilst letting my drones hit the target from closer in.

Hi sec to start with, I may move into lo sec if I can get this to work and not suffer too much damage.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks.

If you're in gallente or caldari high sec doing combat exploration then a 2 LSE shield Ishtar works wonders, once you get into more difficult low sec or 0.0 sites you'll have to start active tanking and then either shield or armor work depending on what faction space you're in. Never passive plate a pve fit btw unless you have RR

In 0.0 guri space the 2x LSE 100mn ab fit works very very well. Keep in mind (as I understand) blowing up the SIG will help keep the rats focused on you and not the drones.

This is the fit i've been using with my ishtar doing sansha anomalies.
It will hit at 80km with Garde II's for just shy of 800 dps. Cap stable running tank + AB. You can hit anything cruiser size or over, even if they make it to close orbit range. Frigates however need to be killed before they get into a close orbit.

You really need perfect CPU fitting skills to make it work, it just fits with 1 cpu left over. PG isn't a problem tho.

I use the navy omni links because they give an extra 5% each over t2's (they also use 3 less cpu) If you want to use t2 instead you can drop the small solace remote rep and that will give you just enough cpu to fit t2. Alternatively if you dropped one of the DDAs for a 2nd faction hardner you'll have CPU left over from that.

I feel like i need to add here: Speed tanking is your friend, big time. Park yourself a good distance out from the rats, drop sentries and orbit them. Decent navigation skills will improve the speed your ship maintains while orbiting and actually makes a pretty big difference to how well this tanks. If you're not moving, you're going to die :p.

IMO:

If you're out in null, alone, you need an active tank. Self reps.
If you can't fix your own damage, you would eventually have to dock up.

ishtar have very nice base kin/thermal resists on shield and armor, 100mn ab + 2xLSE and rigs or 10mn ab, med. shield booster + boost amplifier + dc and rigs... both bits have enough tank to survive hiend nullsec anoms (as long as youre fighting with gurista)

for active tank you need to have decent capacitor skills...

shield passive with 100mn ab is good. Otherwise, active tanked armor is very good, and active shield can be good.
