Steam is pretty much malware in that it can interfere with the normal functioning of your computer, they have an annoying anti-cheat system residing in your system permanantly using its resources, and they have the right to prevent you from playing any of the games which you purchased if your account is disabled for any reason they deem.

You could potentially lose access to all your games if they decided you did something wrong. They also have an EULA which basically says "we don't sell private information we collect" but also "we may change this EULA whenever we like".

I'd just pay to get have the character transferred if I was you. Not sure if you can do a buddy invite for an extra month to make up for some of the cost of the transfer...
