Force players to rename ships

From what I frequently read in this forum, people really loath free intel that Local chat provides. I wonder if they also loath free intel as much provided by players who forget to rename their ships and are seen on Dscan? Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate the laziness that of other players that gives away much needed information to me. But if Local should be changed to provide less easy access to intel, so should other mechanics.

Therefor, I suggest to make ship name changes mandatory when you assemble a ship. The client surely has ways to check if a ship is named "[Player name]'s [ship name]" and it should be easy to determine if the player has changed the name. Of course, just to cater the I-get-annoyed-quickly-by-all-those-notification-windows people, the message can be disabled. But then those who use this option must stop complaining about free intel in this forum. Blink

hell no. That would be incredibly annoying. I rename my ship when and where I please, and so can everyone else.

I'm sure that would be very easy to code but no. Why should people be forced into not giving intel away? If people can't be bothered to rename their ships they give away free intel. Them's the breaks.

No matter how little dev time this would take it's still a waste of dev time.

It is about free availability of intel. As said, people constantly complain about that with regards to the local chat, but this kind of free intel is endorsed. A bit hypocritical in my opinion.

You're missing the point about local chat intel. There's no way for a player to counter it. It always gives it's intel. With ship names the players have the ability to remove that intel. If they chose not to that's their choice.

They are two completely different things.

i wouldn't mind an option to set what your default ship name is instead of TheMercenaryKing's Ragnarok

Some people use it to fake the intel (rename ship to someone else's in local)... So yeah, no!

I honestly think a ship should just be named whatever it's called when assembled. It would make hanger management easier.

Also, I don't think anyone is complaining about ship names as intel. I have never come across a group of pilots using default shipnames in wormhole space - In null what does it matter? You have local.

I see no reason to force players to rename their ships. A lot of times I can't rename my ship to "Gizznitt Malkite's WTFBBQPWNMobile" because the names too long. I like the ability to keep the ship name it was given when assembled, as after I fit a ship I then name it to something that lets me know how its fit:

Say, "Exploration Equipped Helios". That way I, and every other Harpy, Jaguar, or Sabre will know exactly how my Helios is fit.

Simply put, I think the default name should be [Class of Ship]. i.e., if it is a Rifter, the name should be by default, Rifter.

The Rifter is a specific ship design in the Frigate class.

Aside from that, I think a better solution is to let each individual player come up with a "default" ship name that would be applied to each ship that player assembled. The options menu seems like a good place to put something like that. If a player leaves the box blank then they get a default name ship name as they do now.

I know a few times I have been in a hurry and caught myself in a default named ship...whoops.

I always rename my ships, but that doesn't mean everyone should have to. It's a little extra bonus when someone's flying around with their name on their ship, but one that should be taken with a grain of salt. Sure, it's probably the case that a capsuleer name on a ship is indicative... but don't bet your life on it.

That's pretty impressive, and a good use of renaming. That sort of thing should always be encouraged.

I have to my knowledge not yet posted in such a topic. It just jumped to my mind, quite literally, after seeing a Machariel on dscan with the pilot's name on it and who still was in local.

Forcing people to rename their ships doesn't mean in my opinion that it should be called something like Jack or Potato, it can be everything the pilot imagines and certainly also such feints as Gizznitt Malikite uses, there would/should be no restrictions.

Do not agree with this proposal.

The intel given out by ship names is avoidable by those who actively make the decision to rename their ships. Their actions have now given them a small advantage over others in the game. (They had the knowledge and took the time to perform the rename action.... they get an advantage)

Forcing people to change every ship name will remove this, and serves only to 'dumb down' the game.

Not to mention it will be Fracking annoying!!!!!
