Microsoft, ironically, is doing more to kill desktop computers than any other company. Windows 8, a.k.a. Tickle-Me Windows is awful.

If Windows 9 for desktop still carries all the baggage of Microsoft's current touch fetish, then a Mac desktop is likely in my future.

Not even comparable. iOS is a device operating system, android is a regular computer operating system. Apple did that thinking their users were too dumb to manage their own battery life, bottom line. Lol

Well most users are to dumb to manage their devices. Lol

It just seems to me everyone is trying to copy the success of apple products.

On android they usually learn, it's either that or recharge every couple hours. Works for me, my N7 can be sleeping but then wake up to let me know I need to add another skill to my que, or that a contract is waiting for my attention, can sleep for days w/o recharging. Apple makes things easy but harder at the same time.
Windows 8... you just cant fix stupid. I only get every other release of Windows, in step with their bad - good - bad - good release history.

"This means that with Windows 9 Threshold, we can expect to see a Desktop version, returning the OS to its roots; the second version will focus on the Start screen interface and the touch apps; a third version will be available for ARM-based devices, such as tablets."

You mean kinda like they did with win 7 and its different versions Roll in any case it looks like Microsoft is holding true to its "roots" in that one should skip over to every other OS.

Sigh, Multiple versions like that is bad too m'kay microsoft?

Just make one for Desktops/Laptops and one ARM version for phones/tablets.

I think touchscreen even on a laptop is very dumb and unintuitive. A large trackpad is way better then touch on a laptop.

After using Windows 8 as Tech for a while it became clear to me that rather than remove the command line and DOS shell from the OS, like they wittered on about forever, they have fully reincorporated it back into the system but changed its name to 'Search'.

WinDOS 8

Hated windows 8 since I first saw it. Went out and got a new laptop, which ofc has 8 on it, so forcing myself to use it. got eve loaded so that's all I need. The thing that I find funny is all these so called 'experts' who keep saying the pc is in its death throws, that the tablet will be king cause sales are down... no idiot, sales are down because windows 8 is a worse hunk of junk then windows ME

OMG Comet Mining idea!!! Comet Mining!

Not saying PCs are dying but I do know someone that sold their laptop because the smartphone did everything he needed it to do and never bothered to use it. I think we might be seeing more of this in the future but there will always be PCs around.

Well I guess we will get to see what Windows 9 is about here in April, hopefully they fixed their mistakes.

I purposely bought a PC with WIndows 7 because I didn't want 8. It's not like I can't navigate Windows 8... I don't want to. I don't see why would I want to be more difficult to do basic tasks.

I would prefer DOS came back.

Computers were way cooler when stupid people couldn't use them.

I personally will not touch Win9 unless the Metro UI can be completely removed from the installation.

Even HP are turning their backs on Win8

I work on computers for a living, and I installed Windows 8 on one of my systems at my shop to learn how to operate it. (I bought it with the $40 upgrade available for the first few months). Using tricks I've read online, and reviving a few tricks of my own I can use it fairly good now. I still prefer Windows 7, but Windows 8 is tolerable now.

When I first used Windows 8, when I couldn't find the Control panel, I spent a few minutes online and found, essentially a, "Dummy's Guide for people upgrading to Windows 8". A nice read, and after about 15 minutes I had figured out where most everything was.

I seriously don't see why everyone has issues with windows 8. I have it on my current computer and have zero issues. I mean there is a gigantic file/folder looking button that has everything.

Humm!

After the experience of one of my colleague’s wife. I will be removing Windows 8 (8.1) from a 5th machine!

As described by colleague!

She bought a new laptop as she was fed up sharing the Windows 7 PC!

Got it home and after following the 3 to 4 pictures of how to put the battery in and turn it on she was presented with Windows 8 (End of all documentation other than warranties etc..)

After 1 hour she was back down the store to ask them what the £$%^!!!

With husband watching, after 1 more hour, with 12 of the staff all having a go and even a few customers. She was shown how to get to the desktop approx. every other reboot.

She took it home and tried get some email, after another couple of hours it was back down the store again. This time the Store Manager contacted one of their head office technical guys!

Over the phone he eventually concluded that Windows 8 had been wrongly set up (By person or persons unknown) and hadn't the foggiest on how to get any emails!

In the end the manager suggested they take it back and install Windows 8.1 for them as 'that would make act like Windows 7'.
So they gave the laptop back and after a week they got a call to say 8.1 was now on.

They collected it!

Email now half works they can see emails but cannot send or delete them!

Next they tried installing the Microsoft Office she bought the same time as the laptop!

After 4 evenings they got it as far as being able to open parts of Office by searching for files and then seeing if they were they where the executable parts. As it seems Office had announced that it had installed, but they could not find hide nor hair of Tiles or Icons to make anything work.

That is when my colleague contacted me. As they did not trust the store any more!

They are going to be purchasing a Windows 7 disc this weekend!

Even if my colleague's description is OTT!

I really think Microsoft has really found a great way to put the average person in the street off anything Microsoft!

I've only used Windows since 98 so I can't speak about versions prior to that.

Notice a pattern here?

Windows 98 - Good
Windows Me - Awful
Windows XP - Good
Windows Vista - Awful
Windows 7 - Good
Windows 8 - Awful

It just scares me what going to happen to pc gaming if windows 9 is another failure.

Gonna have some serious compatibility issues to whatever everyone switches to after the windows.... Curse you DirectX!!!!!

A lot of folks don't remember that XP, when it was first released was pretty rough. It had a lot of hardware compatibility issues, especially for games and graphics. It took it about 6 months or so before it'd run most of my games at the time, but I actually was forced to upgrade to it sooner when I built a new computer with 1 Gig of RAM, which Win98 could not handle.

Vista's early years were similar to XP, but in some ways were actually not as bad as XP's early years. Again, after about six months or so most issues were fixed with that as well. Vista's biggest issue was that it had too steep of system requirements compared to the computers that were out. A lot of pre-built computers from HP, Dell, etc, were actually below the recommended system requirements for Vista, but the companies put it on anyway (RAM was the big thing). But, if you did have a good enough computer with properly updated drivers (Creative Labs/Sound Blaster really drug their feet getting their audio drivers updated for Vista) it actually ran pretty good.

"But that's just how I feel about it. What do you think?"

I remember this well, they also tried to sue some guy who made his own drivers to get Creative cards working on Vista. This is the reason I now buy Asus soundcards.
