I'm a little confused about what change this is for the directional. I heavily use the directional in WH space and enjoy the ability to pop open the directional scanner, drop the scan to say 5 degrees (although its generally left there), select the planet, camera automatically rotates to selected planet, press scan, voila. I now know which planet that ship is at or where to start looking for a POS parking lot. No result? Click next planet, scan. Click next planet, scan.

So basically are you saying I'm now going from two steps to three or four?
click planet/scan --> click planet/press tracking button/scan

Arkon, I know you know better than that. The tracking camera is one of the best d-scanning tools to come along in years! Once you have it set up, just press 'c', click on a celestial, and boom! Your d-scanner is centered on the object.

The hot key has always been there. The biggest problem has been getting the darn custom position to align properly with the 5-degree d-scan cone so it would actually be pointing at the object you want to d-scan. But the effort is well-rewarded when you start clicking planets to find someone or something.

I saw the changes on sisi yesterday. Looked good at first glance. But I was testing something else at th etime so didn't get a good feel for the changes. I'll check it out tonight if I have time.

If you're not a user of the tracking camera, it may be that you are not aware of this relatively obscured feature. In general, we aim to improve the visibility of this feature and its controls

So is that why you turn it back on after every patch? Because you believe it is the better option, regardless of how many ppl can't stand it and turn it off as soon as humanly possible.

Quick question, does the new radial menu suffer from the same issue as the scanner button radial menu, clicking on the button does nothing(except bring up the radial menu), when it should be click on button does default action, and holding down brings up the radial menu.
Default action for Scanner button should be open most recently used scanner(same as it used to be)
Default action for Camera button should be to reset camera (as it currently is on TQ)

Before you could have your ship facing one position and camera have another, now i'm very confused i don't understand, the proposed options only mimic the custom / centered modes and don't mention behavior of DSCan.

Does that mean that whenever the tracking is enabled the D-Scan will now use it ? Or that we are forced to align the ship for DScan ? We cannot have DScan scanning in front of ship where camera still tracks another object (eg. another ship), not necessarily celestial ?

We clearly saw that a way to reliably and quickly center the tracking camera position was needed to support directional scanning. We also wanted to support the uses players put the custom position to and so we provide clear controls for both – together with distinct icons to indicate the mode on the radial button itself.

Can you please allow us to set the delay after which the camera starts tracking a new target and the speed with which it will adjust to the new target? When I select different targets in rapid succession from the overview I kind of become motion sick and I imagine the camera behavior is rather seizure inducing because it goes every which way.

The directional scanner's core functionality of following the direction of the camera view and scanning from the center of the camera view (taking into account any camera center offset that a user has chosen to use) will remain entirely unchanged.

I think it's important to realize that all the directional scanner check-box really did was turn on the tracking camera in the centered tracking position mode when the scanner interface was open. It did this, in our analysis, in a pretty suboptimal manner both in terms of the UI's usability and intelligibility, and in terms of its behaviour with respect to mode transition and camera positioning and motion.

We've found that the direct linkage of the tracking camera to the directional scanner is undesirable when balancing all factors. It can be used with the directional scanner and it can be used very easily either through the short-cut or, yes, an extra step via the radial button. We're conscious of this and understand it's not necessarily ideal for everyone but we're going to hold to this decision for this release given the balance of feedback on it. That's not to say we won't keep it under review.

In response to a couple of people who seem to have misread the blog a little, let me say again: the tracking camera will be off by default in the new implementation.

A lot of the good ideas which have been introduced over the last year, have been overshadowed by the policy CCP seem to have over "features" that are met with player outrage. The ESS being a prime example, where they ignore over 1000 post of negative feedback and barrel on ahead regardless.

So all of this is largely irrelevant, as they really do no give a shlt what we say.

Could the hotkey become a global thing, rather than something that only works when you've clicked something on overview first?

you can bind it to some non-character key like 'end' and it will toggle even if your cursor is in a chat box. same for 'make overview active' and probably all other windows

Great additions Smile

And one more thing that I wanted to share since the new radial menu came out:

What you did with the radial menu is fantastic. I barely used the old one, but can't imagine the game without the new one now Big smile Usability, design, response... everything feels so natural. I really think it's the best piece of UI that I ever had a chance of using.

I like how CCP is assimilating the playerbase into the new UI ship icons slowly but surely. They already started with the new icons in ISIS, and now the radial menu for tracking.

I would love for them to be flat out implemented, but that would anger an unknowable amount of the playerbase and seeing how CCP likes to play it safe. I'm just glad it's getting there.

Here is a preview picture for anyone who doesn't know what I am talking about.

Check out the overview ship icons.

Oh, I perfectly understand, Hal Morsh — a mission like this requires courage, skill, and heroism… qualities you are clearly lacking. Have you forgotten you're one of the bloody immortals!?

Photoshop? Source? Something? Question

edit: Never mind, I found it. It looks like it's from some EVE Vegas presentation.

Things that would really help the tracking camera:

1. Don't change my zoom level every time I change targets.
2. Really, stop changing my zoom level, I hate it.
3. Give us a mode that always faces the direction we're traveling.
4. And when I switch into that new # 3 mode, DON'T CHANGE MY ZOOM LEVEL!

Thanks :)

I'm also confused how it's ever helpful to have the camera face the station when you've undocked. 95% of the time I want to right click space to click a (mission) bookmark.
