Unpredictable play

I've seen a few fittings in my day, and most seem pretty vanilla and without any sort of interesting or unpredictable flair.

Does anyone specialize in flying ships with unpredictable fittings?

How successful would a small roaming gang of "crazy", "unfocused", or "crazy-unfocused" ships be, flow by competent organized pilots? What would the pros and cons be of this kind of gang PvP?

Discuss.

You really think someone would do that? Just log into EvE and tell lies?

Considering the game is based around specializing, I dare to say not effective at all, when facing specialized counterparts.

/discussion.

This is as nice as I get. Best quote ever https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=4137165#post4137165

I'm glad everyone knows the discussion is over now. Where is ISD or a Dev? We should lock this thread down now guys, Erufen Rito has given his opinion and that means that the discussion is over.

well i attended several weird fleets like laser fitted ventures doctrine, mining ships revenge or noob ships rage ops. Our enemy was like "WTF? 0.o" underestimated us and latr they died.

Fun as hell. unpredictable situations with unpredictable fleets with weird fits is what makes this game so great :)

99% of the people out there use generic fittings and can not think for themselves. What kind of responses do you expect from GD, then ?

Edit: Especially GD. Should move this to Ships&Fittings.

I was looking for more of a general discussion about the pros and cons of unpredictability in PvP. Seems pretty GD to me Blink

The common term is “comedy killmail”.

Not fitting a ship the way everyone else EXPECTS you too is one thing, plain fitting it poorly for laughs or because you bad at EvE is another. The latter is more the "comedy killmail" and ALOD category.

I have been trying to convince a few ppl to get a Battle Nereus gang together for a losec roam instead of the same old same old. Half a dozen Nereus ganking is a lot of neut and EWAR and Warrior IIs.

It would make for hilarious kill-mails if you managed to knock off an unsuspecting solo T2 or T3.

"Lost my tengu again."
"How?"
"Another one of those OP Nereus PvP gangs."

I'm in. Ill bring a badger though.

I feel EWar can make a "poorly" fit ship pretty damn amazing. Also tanking seems rather unnecessary with enough hilarious amounts of EWar.

I used to run a small high sec merc corp and we were mainly armor. This newbro wanted in but could only fly Caldari ships so we came up with a 1600 plate RLML Caracal and filled the mids with webs and target painters.

Obviously this was before the RLML change, but it actually did surprisingly well.

I actually think post-patch the Nereus is the better battle indy. For losec work you can run a LSE, MWD, cloak if you want and if your going defensive even squeeze in warp stabs all the while packing 6 x Warrior II/EWAR drones .

All the while only costing a couple of mill when you do lose the occasional one.

I've played around with EFT quite a bit and you can do surprising things when you think outside the box. Switch from a standard tank here, or adding some Ewar there, you can get make some pretty interesting fits that are far from something one would expect.

PvPers with too many skill points and time on their hands usually do this. However, it's quite hard to do with gangs, because "crazy" gang setups generally have gaping vulnerabilities, or they wouldn't be "crazy". You'll mostly find weird stuff with solo pilots. If a setup like that consistently performs well and gains fame, it may even make it into the metagame.

Some examples from my own history:

  • Solo lowsec Apocalypse - actually managed to kill more than it costed me, somehow.
  • Brawling TD Malediction (and other assorted TD stuff) - Used to be rare and only flown by niche pilots, but is now super common.
  • Any kind of Raptor
  • Solo Maller
  • Kiting laser Myrmidon
  • Many more

Most times you try to do this, you end up with something either completely inoperable, or very ineffective. When it does work and you get something that both works and is reliable, you start having loads of fun, and people conclude that you're a space wizard.

Overall, it requires lots of skill points (to fit the weirdest things possible), personal skill and experience, and being okay with failing over and over.
