Hi folks. I'm close to getting ready for L4 missions and battleships. I had decided on this fit for a Typhoon class ship:

However, I saw this fit on another thread where the original poster had requested help with a fit giving 70+ on all resists:

Now, a couple of questions to the experts...

On EveHQ, the first fit shows a much greater 'Tank Ability' of 314 DPS vs Angel, despite having lower resists. The second fit, with its greater resists, shows a much poorer 'Tank Ability' of merely 51 DPS vs Angel. EveHQ also reports an effective EHP oh the first fit as ~50000 vs an EHP of ~72000 on the second fit. Am I missing something here? Which should i be concentrating on? Tank Ability or Resists?

Also, both fits are CAP stable. Is this an essential requirement for L4 missions..or can you get away with having CAP at 3 or 4 mins?

Lastly, as an aside, are these decent fits for L4 missions in Minmatar space?

1) I have tried shield tanks and they did not work well.
2) The ship has bonuses to missiles, use them. Spending slots and rigs on drones are just waste.

The first fitting got a shield booster, the 2. one is a buffer tank and the 52 dps tank is the passive recharge of the shield. While you can do most L4s with a shield buffered phoon or pest, it is probably not the best idea for somebody that is new to L4s. Stick with a active armor or shield tank.

As for cap stability, it is not really needed, the amount of tank and time that it has to run depends a lot on your skills, your fitting and how you play a mission. 300 dps tank for 3-4 minutes is enough if you know L4s inside out, for beginners a bit more and a longer runtime might be better, since they take longer for the npcs(what means they need to tank them longer) and might screw up with triggers(respawn mechanics).

As for the pith large booster, they are in general one of the best bang for your buck boosters since they are not to expensive(around the 200M ballpark), provide a good tank, need far less fitting than XL boosters and are not that cap/clicking intensive than XL boosters.

2) Because it's buffer tanked, not active tanked.

Level IV missions have wrap scrambling frigates, so 90% of the time, you will want your light drones out, and near your ship.

'Cap Stable' usually is based on all mods permanently on and running. Turn off your prop mod and pulse your booster and you should be fine.
Not many of my ships are ever cap stable.
Don't get stuck in the 'cap stable' zone, or a lot of your ships will be gimped.

Also, imo.. tank of 50 is NOT acceptable on a BS, ever.

That vastly depends on your play style, I for myself only use light drones when I absolutely have to(what is avoidable most of the time), since it is a big wast of time and dps compared to sentry drones.



Drones are a very big chunk of your dps in a Phoon thx to the sentry's, the first fitting is pretty much a cookie cutter L4 setup. As for frigs, you can kill most while they try to get close with sentry's and finish up the leftovers with lights, then switch back to sentry drones. You can kill painted frigs with CMs, but it is not that time efficient(normal frigs need 1-2 volleys, elite frigs 4-5, what is enough to kill a BS in the meantime).

Why is that? I've been shield tanking Minmatar ships all the way thru level 3s. Is armour the way to go for L4s? Or does the Typhoon class generally lend itself to armour?

Shield phoon against Angels makes good sense, Fleet Phoon is even better because it has more drone bay and bandwidth and it's easier to fit. This Normal Phoon fit is... slightly expensive but it works like a charm. And armor tanking ships against angels (unless Amarr T2/T3) is a REALLY bad idea. You can swap the fit to armor when tanking Amarr npc.

Am I placing too much emphasis on 'Tank Ability'?

The second fit was made with the requirement of 70+ resists, 70k ehp and as much damage out to 100km, it also didn't need a shield booster or a prop mod. It was also most likely to be used in conjunction with a logi ship.

For Lvl 4s you probably want a shield booster and a prop mod/mjd depending on the range you want to fight at.
