Tips on keeping reasonable standings

I ran some missions the other day, was checking my standings and all was fine. Then I checked again later and my standings looked like this

Amarr -1.74
Caldari -1.64
Gallente 0.16
Minmatar 0.63

So I noticed I need to fix my Amarr and Caldari and did some Amarr missions. After about four level 1 security missions my standings now look like this

Amarr -1.74
Caldari -1.62
Gallente -0.06
Minmatar 0.35

How can I manage this and am I missing something here? I didn't do any storylines or "very important missions" with the Amarr either.

Your standings with Empire are far too high, OP. I recommend no higher than -5 with each.

That would be why your Amarr ratings didn't go up. Regular missions only raise corp standings; the Storyline/Very-Important ones are what raise faction standings. Taking any kill-other-empire-dudes missions will drop the faction standings with said empire.

There are also derived standings, where standings with empire Y will vary based on how much W, X, and Z like/hate you. This can be seen in the Caldari standings, where dropping your Gal/Min caused that one to go up slightly.

If you look on the mission details before agreeing, there should be a symbol of the faction you going to shoot up, reject the mission with the symbols you don't want to damage standings with.

Run a lot of missions for SOE. You can get decent gains with Gallente and Minmatar without trashing your Amarr/Caldari.

Also, pick a good corp that will let you tag along on level 4's to increase your standings faster. Contact me if you need to be put in touch with a reputable group.

See Bio for isk doubling rules. If you didn't read bio, chances are you funded those who did.

In addition to alternatively doing the storyline mission for the opposing factions, NEVER EVER accept a mission that puts you against another empire faction. You lose a buttload of standings points like that. Just look at the icon near the mission location. If it's an Empire, decline it. If the next mission is also an empire mission, wait four hours and decline again.

Training some social skills helps too.

And I might be wrong on this, but I think doing storylines for the Sisters of Eve slightly increases all your empire standings.

I just undocked for the first time and someone challenged me to a duel. Wat do?

You can repeat the beginner schools 3 times for each faction. 12 times counting your original school.

Aside from doing all 12 beginner schools ... google "EVE Datacentres", the datacentres take pirate tags in exchange for standing. You generally need to buy the tags before talking to the agent and SOME of the tags will be far too expensive for a new player (hundreds of millions of ISK for a set) but do not let that daunt you as there are heaps of agents that take quite cheap tags in exchange for a substantial standing increase.

train Connections to boost your positive
train Diplomacy to boost your negative
train Social to increase the amount of gain when running storylines.

With social at 5, you can bounce between agents and round out your standings to ~5, at some point it diminishes though, and you lose more than you gain..... ie: If your standing is at 5 and you do a storyline for that agent, you get less increase than you would if your standing were at 1.

Edit: Correction -- Social is all that is needed high to make this more effective. corrected above.

Yeah, basically you get a percentage of the difference between your current standing and +10 so the closer you get to +10 the smaller the gain for the same percent increase. Same applies for a drop in standing, its a percentage of the difference between your current standing and -10 .
