Can I delete them to reduce the size of the client when moving it around on a USB stick? I suspect I can but I'm not sure, cheers.

If brute force isn't working, you're just not using enough.

Please Note: Any advice given comes with the caveat that nothing will be suitable for every situation.

Yes you can delete them; these files are kept if you have 'Delete patches after use' unchecked in the launcher.
I can't really imagine a scenario where keeping old patches on the disk would be useful, so, yeah.
