What good are wormholes?

I've heard a little about worm holes, but not much of it was good. Why do players explore worm holes and to what benifit?

Wormholes are areas of space that offer more challenging and profitable PvE opportunities but are also much more dangerous as no one in the system shows up in local chat, so you never know if you're alone or not. They're generally not for new players as even the lowest level wh systems require a well fit battlecruiser flown by a character with good skills at a minimum to do solo, and the highest level wh's require highly skilled players working in groups. And the biggest threat you'll face in wh's will be other players and not the sleepers due to the lack of intel local usually provides. They're also very good for doing PI.

I've never used worm holes, but i believe there are mining opportunities on the other side, but they are also quite dangerous. Be careful for other players.

Also good for roaming. Finding people who dont pay attention and jump on them while they are mining, doing sites, or PI.
They can also be handy if you want to travel and you happen to find a wh that goes from say.. Minmatar space and ends up say... 2 jumps from Jita, or find one in empire that eventually lands you deep in 0.0.

But wh space is sort of a.. love and hate thing.
Some love it, and live there permanently, others cant stand it and avoid them like the plague.
Honestly you have to try it for your self to find out if you like it or not, dont base it on other peoples opinions, it simply varies to much from person to person.

The high ==> deep sovereign null wormholes are indeed a lot of fun. Makes it even easier than ever before to get cloaked and go AFK deep in someone's prized space.

Works better if your character is named something like "NotACynoAlt IPromise".

Solo wormhole exploration is alright, but you can end up spending a lot of time looking for what you want. Say you have a venture fit for gas mining (some probes for scanning). You have to hope that the wormholes you enter have what you're looking for and aren't active (i.e. someone else is home).

Wormholes are better in a group because you can have dedicated roles (scanning, mining, combat - hopefully not all on the same run).

Planetary resources are very high in a WH. I make about 500M to 800M a month with PI when i can be bothered doing it. Just ratting can get you lots of ISK in the right ships. Typically t3's but in a pinch you can slowly do sites in a drake (c1 and c2 anyways). You must salvage however to earn anything, the blue loot is not really worth it. Sleepers are a very hard NPC.

Then with no local and the fact that anyone who is a regular in WHs are typically in cloakies. You tend to lose ships no matter how careful you fly. But mostly you make a lot of isk for each lost ship.... mostly.

Join a WH corp to find out more. Or do what i did. Scan one down and jump in ... don't forget your probes as i did. Getting out again when you forget to BM or if the hole collapses is via pod death express.

You can do a lot of things in wormhole systems that you can do in K-space (Known Space, area shown on the map). Killing rats, salvaging, exploration, PvP, etc, etc. Wormhole systems also allow some some security as the entrances/exits change regularly. This requires a bit of effort for people that want to get into the wormholes and may affect how the security works.

Wormholes operate in different manners:

- Some wormholes will lead directly from one part of K-space to another. This can allow for rapid transport of goods, fleets, etc. Especially handy if you want to get to a market hub from Null sec. It can save you dozens of jumps depending on where the wormholes lead. Or allow you to make surprise attacks on enemies by jumping deep into their territory.

- Other wormholes will lead to Wormhole systems. These systems are like regular K-space systems, however, there are some things noticeably absent. Stations, for example, do not exist in W-space systems. People will live out of a POS (Player owned starbase). As previously mentioned, you can do a lot of things in W-space that you can do in K-space.

- Class 1-3 wormhole systems have connections to K-space, while Class 4-6 wormholes are only connected via wormhole systems.

- Wormhole systems can have different effects on your ship: Shield/Armor modifiers, Cap modifiers, Weapons modifiers. Some are good, some are bad, depending on what you're doing.

There's no business like wormhole business!

The best thing about wormholes? The unknown!

Every day you'll never know exactly where your wormhole will connect, who's in it with you, or what resources will spawn for you to harvest. Wormholes aren't simply a location - they're an adventure. Big smile

If you like excitement and a sense of the unknown in your daily EVE-life then wormhole space is fantastic.

If you're looking to make good ISK then wormholes are once again a fantastic location.

And of course if you're just looking to murder and gank people using stealthy/sneaky methods then wormholes are once again a fantastic location to find ganks and/or PVP.

Maybe you hate Empire-space, and just want to be left the **** alone. Again, wormholes are for you.

Maybe you just want a chunk of space to call "yours"? Wormholes.

Wormholes are great, my characters would never live anywhere else. Smile

All the stuff needed to make the Strategic Cruisers (aka T3's) is only found in wormholes
You can mine, but generally your better off doing that in hi-sec.
There is a fairly hefty degree of logistics involved with wormholes as POS Fuel has to be shipped in, and your products have to be shipped out.

For what it is worth, my corp with 4 members that multi-boxed two-to-four accounts each, would do C5 and C6 sites with one-to-four capital escalations. We typically averaged >700 million to 1.4 billion ISK each, per 4 hour session, largely dependent on luck, and how many wormholes we had to roll to find a decent system.

If memory serves, it took something like 11 minutes to clear a C5 site. We would clear around 14 or more sites per 4 hour session. We didn't like doing C6 sites, as they have a lot more non-battleship Sleepers that rarely dropped ribbons.

As for Planetary Interaction (PI), I was earning just over 3 billion ISK a month doing extraction and P1 processing in w-space, and P2/P3 processing in hisec. I had to use a freighter to haul the P1 out of w-space. Two characters extracting in w-space, one character processing in hisec.

Everyone should try a WH at least once... preferable in a cheap, disposable frigate and with a zero-implant jump clone. Because you're going to die and you'll probably have forgotten to bookmark your exit (doh!). But you'll have fun, too, and if - after trying it - you feel the fun was worth the adrenaline fueled paranoia attack then by all means continue doing it! And if it wasn't fun, well, go back to doing something else that you do enjoy.

Such could be said for just about anything in EvE, really. Try everything once, and once you have, stick to what you enjoyed the most afterward.
