DirectX, OpenGL ... Mantle...

Check out this Mantle demo. It's AMD's new API for graphics which cuts down on an awful lot of driver calls, resulting in far more processing power. Does this look a bit like an Eve fleet fight to you? Could be a new kind-of Homeworld, or whatever, but controlling 5,000 units in an RTS is over twice as many as current limits in games like Supreme Commander II and Star Craft.

The only downside is that NDIVIA are unlikely to support it, probably coming out with one of their own and that means developers will have to code to both in the absence of a common API. Still, quite pleased I went with an ATI card if this gets widespread support Lol.

This kind of stuff makes me mad I really wish they could settle on a common API but such is the way of business.

Hopefully it's as good as they say it is.

Mantle is AMD only, which is a bad thing.

3Dfx had Glide, and see where it got them. Glide was a lot better than either DirectX or OpenGL in it's time, but 3Dfx got complacent due to that and got overtaken very, very quickly. I can see the same happen to AMD.

Mantle is released. AMD raises production as it anticipates an increased demand. Games don't use Mantle as much as they would like, and eventually NVidia and even Intel will overtake them by simply using general API's as AMD will not have any real motivation to put more R&D into the gpu design itself "because Mantle".

This seems dimwitted, but it's what managers do.

If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all...

Well, no. AMD left the door open for others (no doubt with Nvidia in mind) to use Mantle but considering how bitter the competition between the red and green team have gotten over the years since Nvidia nixed PhysX support on non-Nvidia cards, it might as well be AMD only.

Personally, I continue to be hopeful for Mantle as a alternative to DirectX as Mantle is not being tied to a specific OS unlike DirectX but you make a good point here that it might go the other way entirely for AMD.

Though I have to say, Mantle being timed exclusivity with EA is probably not the greatest of ideas to come out of the red team.

So far I think games that will take advantage of it are Frostbite 3 engine (Battlefield 4), Star Citizen, Thief and 15 others - according to Wiki. But then these days a lot of game engines are abstracted away from the implementation detail, being OpenGL or D3D or some console specific driver layer (Playstation). I suppose you really need to code for the architecture in order to get the full benefit.

Hmm I got to thinking of whats in store for PC gaming if Windows 9 is also a failure? Will devs just keep using directX and Windows 7 or will we see a shift to a more open platform?
