Does crime pay?

I'm aware this subforum is split between criminals and punishers, so the debate will probably be pretty black-and-white. However, I'd like to hear both sides.

The question is this: From a purely financial perspective, not taking into account any personal morals, is it practical to take on killing & stealing for a virtual living? In other words: If all I do for money is commit crimes, can I make as much or more money than someone who does strictly "legitimate" things?

See my KB, the answer is there and this character only does one type of the many profitable crimes.Twisted

It's not as easy as the victims of said crimes make it sound as while the action of the crime itself is fairly simple and quick, there are many additional parts to a successful op than the crime itself.

It is also very hit or miss. There are some sessions were you make nothing or way less than running level 4s or mining and some where you make considerably more.

It's much more dynamic and strategic than participating in the provided isk making content but can also be very boring at times. The thing is, one good adrenaline rush from the success of completing an op will make up for any prior boredom.

Thank you for admitting, and welcome to C&P :)

As for your subject, I'd say it can be. Like others have said, it is more detailed to do it properly. Anybody can run around and pop a ship. It takes time and resources to track a known shipper of high-value product down, figure out their routes, and find the best time to strike to take either the loot, or a ransom. Can you make some bank just running around popping ships? Maybe. Is there a chance you'll waste time and ammo - both of which equate money - and possibly come out in the red instead of the black? Yes.

To make it work, you have to do work.

Welcome to Eve Online/C&P.

For a new player I would recommend Awox'ing high-sec mining/missioning Corps for ransom. It's not skill intensive and if it just so happens that you need a logi, that can be arranged from an outsider. You also don't take security loss as attacking a Corpmate does not invoke Concord action/response.

Here's what you would do:

Join a Corp. Ask if there are any fleets up, or if you can join someone in their lvl 4 mission. Use the appropriate ammo and tank for your set up; for example, your new friend is running a mission that requires Kinetic damage to use again the NPCs and Thermal to tank against. You would tank for Kinetic (and Thermal in case the rats shoot you, but Kinetic is primary) and you wouldn't shoot your new friend with Thermal. You would want to figure out whatever his resist hole is and use that. Say it's a Tengu, you would use EM, etc. If nothings going on, wait it out, gain trust with people, or use the 'my information' -> 'My Corp members now in space' in the Starmap(F10) to try and find someone (more of if you're impatient). When you do find someone, hold them for ransom. When/if they pay you can either destroy them anyways, or let them go if you feel satisfied with the ransom.

I would try to get to know the people first. Figure out who has the most expensive ship, then gain his/her trust, attack them, get ransom and/or loot from their wreck.

If this is your main character it will become more difficult to join new Corps and you will have to come up with reasons/excuses why you left the other ones. This could also potentially backfire if you ever wanted to legitimately join a Corp. However, eventually you will gain other pirate friends which could open other doors for 'employment' if you ever got tired of Awox'ing.

HTH

TL;DR: Awox mining/mission running Corps for ransom.

Abandon all hope ye who x up in fleet

Well planned, thought out crime can pay quite well indeed. Good ol' low sec piracy won't make you space rich but it can do the trick.
I almost always have enough loot in the hangar to buy a new cruiser. Between looting everything from every wreck you either make or find, the occasional clone rat tag and some ransoms here & there you can make enough isk. Just fly cheap, fly smart & have friends.
Sometimes I'm having a good week so I pick up 2 cruisers or a few AF's. Sometimes I hit a losing streak and flip a plex...which inevitably leads to a short string of faction frigs on my loss board followed by a BC or two.

Tl:Dr crime pays, some very well some poorly but its ALL way more fun than shooting at little red crosses.

Actually its mostly criminals and code enforcers. We get along pretty well though. Check out http://belligerentundesirables.com/ for some info on high sec criminal activity, and how to be profitable, or www.minerbumping.com if you want to be on the right side of the law. (A warning, concord does charge us fees of security status and our ships though).

It is very much profitable if you are dedicated to it.

James 315 built his first fifty billion from scamming, before he decided to change career from thief to public servant.

Really though, the best way to make a huge take is to join a nullsec alliance, rise in the ranks, then start a war your side will lose. As morale starts to fall, step up and hold things together, and prove yourself worthy of a director role. Then, steal everything that isn't nailed down, and half the things that are nailed down.

Just ask half of the 2013 directors of TEST Alliance (RIP). Many of them made fabulous profits out of their time.

Is this the place where we jump on the bandwagon of impersonating someone he's not? Once a criminal, always a criminal.

To the OP. Crime does pay, but so does honest work.

The character does not represent the views/opinions of its Corporation or Alliance.

Everything pays. Its just a question of effort to reward. Not to be confused with risk to reward, which is often inversely related. The really good and lucrative crimes pay far better than the same quantity of effort done honestly. And crime is far less risky.

No I am not.

It was a short and misguided weakness on my side. Wanted people to leave me alone.

If you're really interested in making money regardless of the method, I would recommend two methods.

1. Do High sec HQ incursions.
2. Be a scam artist in Jita (or another trade hub).

If you want to have some fun and still generate some decent income, I would point you in the direction of being a pirate. Pirate
