So many good memories of reading her books as a child. Long live the dragonriders of Pern.

For those that are unfamiliar with who she is Shocked, her she is.

Also, OOPE would have been the place to post this.

Have not read anything by her, name seemed familiar, wandered around house for about 3 minutes before I saw her name in a shiny font on the front of a tatty paperback, propping up front of my bedroom TV so I can see it from the mezzanine.

'Mediocre' but influential is probably better description. Smile

Well, my assessment of "terrible" is my own (I can't stand her writing) but I can't argue about her influence, or the fact that a lot of my friends really enjoyed her writing. In that sense, the world has lost a great writer.

Yeah..I enjoyed reading her when I was 12 and 13...............but then along comes Neal Stephenson ! Lol

because even though they are different from each other science fiction and fantasy share common roots
mostly the fact that most of these writers all contributed to Asimov's magazines and most got their starts there
horror too

there's a few first printings of Stephen King mixed in with those old mags

Those of us old enough to in the know enough to understand appreciate the thread

It's sad that Anne McCaffery has passed on. She was a wonderful person and a great writer, and she will be missed.

I met her, many years ago, and the world is a poorer place without her.


And, also, I do not find the usual EvE forum antics appropriate to this subject. If you wish to act the fool, please do it elsewhere.

Many people probably got their first taste of the fantasy genre from reading the Pern series, whether they remember it or not. I enjoyed her work, although I personally cut my teeth on Edgar Rice Burroughs (yes, another "terrible" writer to whom we all owe a great deal).

Anne will be missed.

Met him at the Sheraton 'Hospitality Room' at WorldCon 1988 in New Orleans. Let's just say...I was meeting a 'childhood hero',,,,,,,,,and DRUNK does does not even begin to describe his state !! ROFL. Love him anyway. We've ALL been there.
