Wow, I just logged back on to see a flood of replies to my thread. This community is awesome! I need to read through these posts and do a bit of research I'm sure - ty all very much ;)

The EVE community loves newbros that have the right attitude and are willing to learn:

On the right attitude:
Am I too stupid to play EVE? [Make sure to read the original post (OP), and the whole thread is worth reading too.]

But searching the forums on "right attitude" or just "attitude" will turn up a lot more.

Another income route, which requires very little SP, is trading. But that's a wholly different skillset, of course.

As a combat pilot, trading is doable. A little early on to lower taxes, then add more later. I've got about a month in on trading, including a little in for hauling, otherwise the rest are combat related.

Something like this is comfortable:
Accounting 4
Broker Relations 4
Contracting 4
Marketing 3
Procurement 4
Retail 4
Trade 4
Visibility 3
591,060 points
Then a little into standard industrial T2 ships
Accounting being most useful early on, then more of the rest later.
Add in blockade runner later and you can call it... smuggling hehe

Hi all, I just started playing EvE Online tonight and I must say I am having a BLAST! This game looks so beautiful, the music is great, atmosphere is wow.

It seems like there are a lot of paths to take in this game which is very exciting. I had a few questions as to what to do about this:

1. My main goal is being in large PvP fleets, possibly fleet commanding. I have led some clans in the past for other games, and I feel like maybe I'll do OK at fleet commanding. However, I realize this goal takes a while to get to. What is the best way to train up and learn to fleet command?

2. I saw that you can make "boosters", or drugs, in this game. Is this a good way for newbies to make ISK? I do enjoy crafting so it seems like something I could do.

3. Are there any recommended "corporations" for newbies like me? I have run into the EVE University wiki, so they look interesting already. Are there any other similar organizations I should be looking at?

4. What's the best Minmatar ship I should be looking at?

Thanks everyone! See you in New Eden!

*Note: did not read the replies you already got*

1. Join fleet, join more fleet and join even more fleets. But just keep in mind, EVE ain't the typical MMO, it's "different'. Though leadership skills (as in actual skills as a player) do port over no matter what game you play, but EVE handles a lot of stuff different then the other MMOs out there.

2. Booster market isn't very big. Mainly because they are only really used in a small niche gameplay and the resource for the good booster components are from null-sec.

3. Plenty of new player friendly corporations. If you are looking for a corp, use this guide. As you are looking for PvP, I do suggest the following things:

Join RvB, Brave Newbies Inc. or Faction warfare (each of them has their own pros and cons).
Join public fleets (RvB Ganked is usually ran on Saturdays around 20:00 EVE time / Sunday Sinners is usually ran on Sundays around 20:00 EVE time)

4. EVE doesn't use the typical "x" is best system. Each and every single ship is useful in it's own way. Each ship has their pros and cons, their strengths and weaknesses, their special niche and their counter.

In my opinion joining RVB aka red federation and blue republic would be a great stepping stone for you. They provide new members with ships and you will instantly be thrown into pvp both small gangs and huge fleet battles with faction battleships like the bhaalgorn for kills. They Also have FC training programs if I am not mistaken that I think would be highly beneficial to you! As far as minmatar pvp ships Rifter, Stabber, Hurricane are 3 very good ships to focus on.

On fleet commanding:

You need the following to be a good FC:

1) Either a Command Ship, a Strategic Cruiser, or a Titan to optimize fleet boosts; or a trusted ally that you can have providing fleet boosts instead of you.
2) A very good understanding of what other ships do, so you can quickly assess a hostile fleet, make the big decision (engage or escape), understand what their capabilities are, and discern which ships are the biggest threats and why. An FC needs to be able to see a hostile gang of an Astarte, a Phobos, a Lachesis, nine Celestises, two Ishtars, two Vexor Navy Issues, two Oneiroses, three Exequerors and seven Megathrons, and understand exactly what the hostile fleet is trying to do (in this case, apply damage from medium, long or very long range while using EWAR to disrupt your fleet's ability to repair each other), make tactical adjustments (everyone get close to each other) and assign targets.
3) Knowledge of EVE travel mechanics - both ones you can use, and ones your opponents can use to trap you. Understanding cynos, covert cynos, titan bridges, midpoints and (in the biggest fights) how Time Dilation in one system affects them is critical
4) Charisma (RL) - the ability to persuade people and to just take charge of a situation.
5) A decent computer system and a fairly stable internet connection (home DSL is fine with a reliable router).

As for what I would do toward that goal:

- Join Brave Newbies first. Experience fleet PVP with them.
- Prove yourself to BN, and ask if you can FC a POS bash with them, with an experienced FC along to help if needed.
- Do solo PVP. Nothing teaches you the unique capabilities of other ships than losing to them in solo PVP.
- Train into a Command Ship. These take a LOT of skillpoints to fly well (don't be fooled by them only taking 70 odd days to sit in the hull; you will want to spend at least a year training into them).

I support the New Order and CODE. alliance. www.minerbumping.com

Thanks very much you guys! I see similar themes reiterated across multiple posts, so I'll definitely be checking out some of the stuff mentioned. I think I will be re-rolling the character to slightly change my name (found something I like better and I'm only a few days old), but know that I will be piloting the space lanes following the advice given here! Thanks again everyone!
