Backing OPs on removing the smaller, and arbitrary character limit.

Banks, on an unrelated note, was a giant in his field. A successful while being experimental, prolific, and critically acclaimed writer. He was also a vigorous, if pragmatic humanist. He is missed.

I liked Ian M Banks, The culture novels were quite good, didn't like his aliens though, they always seemed like humans in a rubber suit.


But as a mark of respect to him I say why not?

Dumbing down of Eve Online will result in it's destruction...

I enjoy the Culture ship names immensely and there are a few that fit in the Eve char limit (Me, I'm Counting, Zero Gravitas, God Made Me Do It). I doubt CCP will be extending the limit to let you use the full name of Mistake Not... though.

Supported. Big fan of Banks, who passed away too soon. And while I certainly can use shorter ship names like Attitude Adjuster, Bad for Business or Lapsed Pacifist already, I would much appreciate it if I could name my ship You'll Thank Me Later, Just Another Victim Of The Ambient Morality or Mistake Not My Current State Of Joshing Gentle Peevishness For The Awesome And Terrible Majesty Of The Towering Seas Of Ire That Are Themselves The Milquetoast Shallows Fringing My Vast Oceans Of Wrath.

I am wondering exactly where he he touched you so inappropriately, but each to their own. Have to say the graphic violence and extreme physical and psychological pain and torture are amongst my favourite bits as well. Player of Games is great for that, and Use of Weapons is an ode to pain. Great stuff.

I picked the Wasp Factory and Whit up for a dollar each recently, still haven't read them but I have been putting it off as I have a feeling I am going to be very disappointed.

You will get on fine with the Wasp Factory.

Whit? ... maybe Dead Air would be a better place to start. I still wince thinking about that book.

Back in the days when i actually put effort into my ship names, I too, spent a significant amount of times trying to adapt Bank's ship names.

A longer name limit would be welcome.

Fortunately, there are still plenty of short names that fit, Gunboat Diplomat for example.
