Thinking back to AOL chat rooms, smileys can be spammed a lot, when they are spammed in mass they cause lag

I can see that being a problem for places like jita and stuff but be nice for private, corp, and alliance chat rooms at least

Nothing stopping you from using skype or messenger or HelloKittyLink to talk to your corpies and send all the little smileys, hearts, hugs and kittens you want. It would add nothing to the game, if only yet another possible exploitation risk (cos you know, a lot of the smiley code includes parentheses and semicolons which don't mix well with someone who might have forgotten to parse database input in one of EvE's many databases).

Terrible idea. I personally like the more mature feel of the eve UI compared to all the other childish MMO's out there.

Contrary to what you may believe or have been told, EVE isn't just a chatroom with a space-themed screensaver. The main focus is spaceships, whether you like it or not.

Besides, it's perfectly possible to express yourself with the given alphanumeric and punctuation characters, in the form of actual words, or make use of the emotes inherent to EVE culture, such as "head with waving arm", o/, and "head with saluting arm", o7.
