CCP t0rfifrans, please make that 200MB optional package available for hi0rex nebulae!

Pretty sure it would be much larger than that, but I have no issues with this whatsoever.

Yes, my mistake, looks like 200 meg is what we have now. The actual size for the optional download of uncompressed backgrounds was apparently estimated at around 2Gig. Here's the link for the statement.

I'm completely ok with that size download.

I still think there needs to be more than one backdrop per region. Some of the regions are just so large once-per-region don't make sense at all.

Indeed, one per constellation would be the best, but asking for high-res backgrounds and that is quite a lot, gotta start somewhere

While I definitely do want this, I think baby steps are best advised right now. I wouldn't mind increasing granularity little by little for every expansion. Right now, however, I'm fine with being satisfied for better quality nebula maps than what we have now.

I agree with this. Regardless of whether or not this is done with high priority or not, I definitely want to see high-quality backdrops in the foreseeable future. What I love about the game is that it gets more realistic every year. In the future, I envision that everything will be completely different. Just as everything is completely different now than it was in the beginning.

This post has 26 likes. This shows how many people really want those uber duper nebulas that you and your uber duper computer want.
Really, you dont have to be that selfish. Nebulas are already very nice and detailed. Color depth is a problem yes but i dont think it has to do with low end computers. Color depth doesn't have that much impact on performance.
And you might not, but some people are involved in large fleet battles and in that fight every fps counts, and the last thing you care is a high detail nebula eating your fps. I prefer having all brackets on than having a uber detailed nebula....
I dont understand what kind of more detailed nebulas you want. Those are already like real photos from telescopes. Some people even think they are too bright. Any more detail i dont think will add realism.

Besides super high detail graphics are not what makes a game good. Imo adding direction to stargates and the appearance of nearby stars on background are way way way better and more realistic than high detail super nebulas. I can even live with old nebulas and have this new star system change.

It's not that we're asking for more detail to be added, because the detail is already in the original cube maps. What we're asking for is cube maps with higher image quality. Look at the Crucible wallpapers. The nebulae in the game aren't as sharp as the nebulae in those wallpapers. If we can get in-game nebulae on par with those wallpapers, I will be satisfied.

CCP has worked long and hard on this project. I would think that after such hard work, they would like their nebulae rendered in great quality. The current image quality of the nebulae holds them from displaying their true greatness, in my opinion.

Advocating against something like this is kind of ridiculous. It's like asking an artist to create a painting for you, but settling for a photograph of the painting instead of the actual thing.

One of the suggestions in the huge Visual Papercuts thread is "Go nuts with state of the art graphics but allow people to turn things off". What's wrong with having options? If people want to dedicate more of their system's resources to rendering the game, then that's their business.

No one is forcing you guys or other guys with lower or mid range computers to have everything on and on high settings. This is why people ask for options. An easy drop-down list (off, low , medium, high) or something less complex (off, low, high) meaning no compression or almost none when running high.

If this is a matter of client size, well let it be an optional download on the website that until you install it there will be no high setting or it will be greyed out.

And also since this is a compression issue not that higher settings don't exist I don't really see an issue.

Options instead of forcing people.....

@ CCP:

I would pay, lets say a PLEX (Aurum equiv), for downloadble high res nebulae.

Dual Pane idea: Click!

Newsflash: Space is big. Nebula's are also... big :)

Please note this image takes a LONG time to appear... because... space is big. :)

But agree with the righteous demands for hi-res nebulas! I support the player bases war of terror!

EDIT: But wow... that is the universe we live in. The only image compression going on here are black holes :)

Seriously? *Wonders if trolling* Eve's Nebula's are 100x better than those, they look absolutely stunning.

Those arn't nebulae, those are aurora borealis. But yes they do look pretty, nearly walked off a few cliffs looking at them.

Yes, but these nebula are near, around or in between the regions, and more granularity is needed.

I'm all for making it optional to use higher resolution nebulae backdrops. I've got 4GB total of VRAM. My machine can more than handle the nebulae in full resolution.

Make it happen, CCP. They're far too beautiful to go to waste on such a low resolution.
