Well I kind of stated my point in my first post in this thread. But aside from that I find that his Sci-fi books and 'Culture' novels stand up as some of the better sci-fi thats been written in a long while.

Love the culture novels. I think I've read three or four of them and I have two more at home to get through at some point. Easily the best sci-fi fiction I've read (although I am yet to read the Dune books).

If they increase the character limit on ship names I will certainly pull a few from the books in commemoration.

I have this issue too. I can't figure out why ship name max length isn't [character first name max length] + [Character last name max length] + [ship type max length] + 4. I hate custom fields that don't allow a custom value to be as long as the default value.

Read one of the Culture novels and really got immersed. But looking back, I'm not sure if I'll read more Banks. I can handle brutality and ultra-violence, but some of his stuff seems a little on the sadistic side....
