Archaeolgy and hacking as a function of time

How profitable, as a function of scanning and cracking time, is archaeology and hacking? I have spent some time finding sites, but it seems to be a hit or miss. As I can gather, its not really a good source of income. Am I missing something or can one be successful in this field?

If you are doing it in high sec only it may not be profitable. However it is a random chance and if someone left items in the site it won't despawn for 2 hours, I believe. You may have just got some one unwanted left overs. But mag sits and radar site can make you some decent isk, sometimes

Thanks Zanban. Im going to ask another question. After reading a few threads im finding there is lingo that I am not familiar with regarding wormholes. What is "K" space and what does C1-6 mean and how are they different?

K space = know space rather that's ever thing from 1.0 systems to 0.0 systems, as for wormholes the c= class and 1-6 are how difficult they are 1 being the easiest 6 being the hardest.

When I was scanning I developed a method which net me about 20mil per hour with minimal skills (I think I was about 3 months old) in a probe in high sec. Of course there were days I would make nothing, and there were days I would make a killing. The trick was to not get too disappointed by the days you find crap the entire day. Also, I may have been overestimating my wages, it may have been closer to 15mil per hour.

Currently I can make about 20mil/hour "Ninja" salvaging incursions, or ~10mil isk/hour halfway-afking L4s in a Dominix (then add in LP), or 40mil / hour ratting in null. Or go run incursions for upwards of 60mil per hour.

High sec exploration is fun and awesome. It's not as profitable compared to other stuff out there, but you can make isk doing it.

Okay, so im a re-noob. I started playing eve in 2005 and stopped in 2009. Im picking the game back up, so I know some things (like ratting in null space), but others are a complete mystery. What is "running an incursion?"
Thanks

A radar site in a c2 can net you 30mil. That's per site. They're not hard to solo.

Rough estimates based on my experience:

c1 anomaly ~ 5mil
c1 radar ~ 10mil
c2 anomaly ~ 10mil
c2 radar ~ 30mil
c3 anomaly ~ 30mil
c3 radar ~ 50mil

Those are all possible to solo. Pick your sites based on what ship you're flying. A t1 battlecruiser can comfortably run c1 sites. You'd want something like a HAC for c2 sites. If you have a t3 ship, c3s are your playground.

Edit: Radar sites are hacking. Magnetometric sites are archeology. The above profits include salvaging and hacking everything. Mag sites are somewhere in between radars and anoms.

In 0.8 to 0.5, I've made anywhere from 0 to 25mil isk on Radar sites.
On Magnetometric sites, I've seen *maybe* 500,000.

-Find a large loop to travel that includes 10 to 15 systems at least.
-Scan down all signatures in a system and bookmark them with a date tag in the bookmark name
-Run the loop daily, and start each system by verifying sites from the previous day are there or not (saves time)
-Probes last an hour or so in space. The moment you find a Radar site, get to it and clear it out (so you make isk and it despawns)
-Use d-scan and watch for probes and other ships that may be using probe launchers to do the same thing you are (Magnate, Imicus, Probe, and the Heron are the starter ships that have probe scan strength bonuses)
-Make sure your ship can handle the rats.
-(optional) Get your skills up as high as you can if you want to scan sites faster and more efficiently

Cosmic Signatures will each have an ID tag on the scan results. When scanning a system, if you can't pin down one site due to it's difficulty (lower skill levels will cause this to happen), take note of the Signature ID, and start scanning for other sites. You can then ignore results showing that ID while you're scanning.
Site ID's are not unique to each Signature. When you come through the next day, each site will have a different Signature ID

Currently, Sacred Manifesto's are selling for close to 5mil isk, and Form Layouts are selling for around 9.5mil.
Positron Cords and Auxiliary parts are filler. I take as many as I can, but they will fill your cargo fast, and don't sell for very much.

Gravimetric sites are profitable too, but only if you have the equipment to mine the rocks, and it is time consuming if you only have one ship.

When you can afford it, get Sisters Core Scanner Probes. 10% Scan Strength increase over standard probes.

Good luck. :)
