Launcher/patching issues

I had never had this problem before, in all 10 years of playing. I reinstalled windows two weeks ago or so, and when I installed EVE I could never get the launcher to, ..launch. Clicking on it would do nothing, and it wouldn't open in task manager. I reinstalled eve, ran the repair both multiple times and nothing. I could launch the game through exefile.exe, which is how I've always done anyways(because launcher is worthless), and have been playing with no problems for a couple weeks now. However I suspected that eve would stop working once a new patch arrives and it cannot be fully installed due to launcher not launching to finalize the installation. Well, it's patch day and I was correct. I can get through most of the installation up until launcher launches to finalize. So the patch isn't fully installed meaning everytime I open exefile.exe, I'm told to download the patch. So I copied my settings, uninstalled EVE, and am about to go make dinner while it downloads again. Is there any workaround to this problem that anyone knows of or am I destined to reinstall eve everytime a patch comes?

What happens when you try to launch the launcher, can you describe the "symptoms"?

Does the launcher generate any logs: is there a file called something like "launcher.2014-01-01.log" inside the launcher/cache folder? or perhaps a file called launcher.exe.log inside the launcher/appdata/EVE_Online_Launcher-[version number] folder?

If there are log files, could you please paste them into www.pastebin.com and provide me with the link so that I can try and figure out what's going wrong?

Thanks for your time.

When I click the launcher icon on desktop it does nothing. When I click the "EVE Online Launcher" in the \prog files\ccp\eve I get an error message which states the file path and "This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."

There is nothing called launcher.exe.log inside folder launcher/appdata/EVE_Online_Launcher-[version number]. I did however click on the launcher contained within that folder. Launcher opened and updated/validated itself, and now when I click on that launcher link, launcher will open and I can use it normally. Every other launcher link still gives an error message/or nothing. Keep in mind I have been playing using exefile.exe and EVE is working fine, so what that update and validation that the launcher just did I do not know other than make that one and only link work.

When launcher just updated a log file in the launcher cache folder was created called launcher.2014-01-08. This is it: http://pastebin.com/rfqtgDMM

The only other log file in the cache folder is called launcher.2013.12.31. This is it: http://pastebin.com/X5Aj8d6n

The launcher uses a sort of bootstrapping mechanism where the launcher.exe in the launcher folder actually just locates the latest launcher version inside the launcher/appdata folder and runs that instead. When the launcher get's updated a new version gets put inside the appdata folder and the old one gets deleted. This bootstrapper seems to be failing in your case and although you are able to run the launcher by running the launcher.exe from within the appdata folder it will be a pain for you to always locate the right version after an update since any direct shortcut you might have would then stop working.

The error message seems to indicate that the bootstrapper is unable to find the right runtimes for the executable. At the moment I can think of two different things for you to try:

1. Reinstall the launcher using http://content.eveonline.com/EveOnlineLauncher/release/EVEOnlineLauncher_2_1_655130.exe

2. Copy the files Microsoft.VC90.CRT.manifest, msvcm90.dll, msvcp90.dll and msvcr90.dll from the versioned launcher folder inside launcher/appdata to the topmost launcher folder (eve/launcher)

Try reinstalling the launcher first. If that doesn't work try step 2.

I'm having a similar problem, my main acc (this one) uses Steam, I can't get the steam launcher to open. I ran repair exe 2 times and reinstalled EVE still nothing.... Instead of the launcher I get a white box that says "Exception" and a bunch of text.... Getting really frustrated here.

I need more information. What does the Exception text say? Can you copy it and paste it into www.pastebin.com and send me the link?
Also, if there is a log file in launcher/cache named something like launcher.2014-01-08.log then it would be great if you could do the same for that.

Have you tried reinstalling the Launcher using the link I provided in my previous post? Make sure it gets installed into your Steam EVE folder.

I had a similar problem today, CCP Aita; happily, following your link to reinstall the launcher solved my issue. I'll try to take you through my series of events as best I can, although unfortunately I have no log files to pass on.

1) Started launcher. Launcher loaded up, said TQ is online & 30k-some players are in game, but launcher would not begin downloading patch. Clicking on the launcher window caused Win7 to generate an error message, saying that launcher.exe is not responding, and asking if I'd like to close it or wait. I waited once, then let Win7 close it.
2) Tried again. Launcher started as normal (although this time had no TQ info), but then stopped responding and had to be shut down by Win7.
3) Checked forums. Found this thread. Decided to try Repair Tool first.
4) Ran repair tool. Repairer found missing files in the client and presumably downloaded and patched those, then failed and crashed when attempting to repair launcher. Repair tool said that it generated a crash log file, but the folder in which it claims to have put this file is empty.
5) Ran repair tool again. Repairer found no issues with client, then found missing files in launcher and claimed to have successfully repaired launcher.
6) Ran launcher. Exactly the same result as step 1 above.
7) Returned to forum thread, followed your link, downloaded launcher installer, ran said installer.
8) Launcher functioned correctly, immediately downloading and installing the latest client patch. Launcher settings were of course reset to default since it had been entirely reinstalled, so I had to go back and reset my settings as I desired.

tl;dr
Reinstalling the launcher worked for me. I'm sorry, I have no log files to pass on which might help track down the problem; the .log file the repair tool claimed to generate does not exist.

I also had these problems today, and the reinstall of the launcher worked for me.

Thumbs up for quick help and advice! :D

Thanks for the reply.

Reinstalling launcher did not work for me. I did however dl the patch today through evefile.exe, and after launcher never launched to finalize it, I went into the appdata folder and updated launcher through that link. Which successfully patched the game and evefile.exe shortcut works again. So I guess I will just do that from now on on patch day.

After doing above I figured I'd try suggestion 2. I pasted those files into the topmost folder, I clicked on that launcher and it updated launcher. Which now makes the appdata launcher, the topmost folder launcher, the ccp\eve folder launcher and the start menu launcher work. Desktop launcher however gives the message "launcher.exe application error, The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000034). Click on OK to terminate the application."

Eh, close enough. I've figured out how to update the game, so I'm good. lol
