A day at the Gym

So there I was at the gym 01/01/14 and here come the people with the new years resolution. Got to admit i try not to judge people however it is hard not to laugh. There was a kid there with him mom and loaded up the squat rack with about 300lbs. He looked like he was 14. He kept mumbling about wanting to be a power ranger (not kidding). He presses it out and brings it down.....stuck. He started screaming for his mother and a bunch of people ran over to him and got it off of him. The last words I heard him say before they left the gym was that and I quote "This is not a gym for a power ranger". I am not making fun of the kid as he obviously had problems but despite myself I couldn't help but get a little bit of a chuckle.

Second situation: A man walks over to the bench press and puts 225 on it and asks for a spot. Happy to do it. As he is reping his legs and feet flew up into the air like something bit him... every rep. I smiled.

Third situation: A woman is using the back machine as an ab machine. Enough said.

Fourth situation: Man in the sauna completly naked spread out followed by swimming in the pool in only his racing stripe underwear.

What is my point? If your trying to lose weight and are new to the gym enviroment, grab a trainer and seek guidence. It's not worth getting hurt over.


Got any funny gym stories? I would love to hear them. Also have a safe new year!

I went to the gym today to go watch these people too but my gym had a big sign in the window that said they didn't want any Sad

The gym was closed

This is absolutely true its all about the new year's resolutions, and because said people dont know what they are doing most (not all) will give up on it in a month or so.

I've already seen one guy on the leg extension machine doing "reps" with way too much weight on the stack. He was sharply kicking his legs out, then letting the weight freefall back down again. A lovely series of :clangs: incase the rest of us weren't awake. He wasn't a young man either, if (when) he cripples himself I'm not sure he'll bounce back all that well.

I think the mistake a lot of people make starting out is a combination of pushing it too hard, compounded with no clear idea of what they want to achieve. Then they end up putting themselves off either through injury, or by making their workout a dull and solitary chore. All mistakes I've made myself.

Start off with group classes like spin, maybe even a martial art. Move to free weights or resistance machines when you have a clear goal in mind. Remember that what happens in the gym is less than half of the equation, and what you're doing in the kitchen is at least as important, if not more so.

One of my top rules is to tell every person I see using a back or ab machine is; STOP!


The general run of the mill corporate gyms are awful. Their fitness staff, albeit things are getting a little better, are severely under qualified to handle assisting the general population enter into and maintain a fitness and wellness based behavior change process.

I go to the park to run and exercise at home using weights and other simple things I bought. It's pretty basic, but gets the job done of keeping me healthy and fit. But most importantly, it allows me to avoid the sort of people the OP describes at the gym P

It is so easy and relatively cheap to create a home workout program.

Hell most of the best work you can do utilizes your body weight. Then add in a physioball and a few other toys like medicine balls, kettle balls, balance boards/disks, club bells, dumbells, and you have unlimited amount of exercise that aer significanlty more functional than most exercises you see people do in a gym.

I like the old Charles Atlas isometrics(?) method, where you use muscles pushing or pulling against other muscles.
Those are all environmentally-friendly exercises you mentioned as well. No powered machinery involved. Some other examples of non-powered workouts: Snow shovel instead of snow blower. Rake instead of leaf blower. Sidewalk or that empty spot at the back of the parking lot instead of treadmill. (Or do an extra lap when you walk the dog). Instead of the stairmaster... stairs.

I like to take a longer break from gym once every year. Usually for a month. Last couple years I've done it right at January. The break fits good with university exams and I don't get to witness the stupidity of NYR idiots. I won't last a month this time, though, I already miss it and I think I'll be back at it in a week.

Straightforward.

I like them... they provide me with entertainment that really livens up the working out.

First thing I do at the gym is run 5 miles (indoor track! Big smile) and there was a fat guy that stepped onto the track and worked his little heart out. I slowed down to his pace (about walking speed) and watched him... he made it about 100 yards before collapsing. Took all my effort not to run over to him and say "good hustle"

I see idiots in the gym every time i go down, sometimes have little moments where I smile for a moment seeing
someone actually doing squats or deadlift, but I usually end up grimacing as they are using the bloody smith machine and not even getting half an actual rep out

Unfortunantly I have to use the smith machine now due to an over caffinated coach puched the bench barbell down in the middle of my set and made my shoulder go click. Jay Cutler uses the smith FYI.

you guys shouldn't make fun of them. give them some pointers and positive reinforcement. the "stick around" factor will likely be higher if their experience at trying to make a change in their life is better. which would lead to a healthier them and, perhaps down the line, a healthier society.

Not making fun just want them to be safe. My views on the gym are
1: It is a commitment to yourself and your body.
2: it is a lifestyle, not a fad.
3:They have to want it bad enough to get it. It's not overnight or quick.
