This is a DDoS Distribuited Denial of Service. There is almost nothing you can do with security equipment inside your data centre to defend against it. According to my information the server has been fine the whole time, it's the network links TO the server that are being melted by external bad guys.

They're doing all they can, and I hope that the poor server dudes don't end up seeing in the new year at work.

Sorry for the newb question but I am no where near a computer programer or frankly that understanding of programs. but what is a DDos attack? is it 12 year olds with hammers putting a virus into the game?

I just don't understand the lingo is all Thanks in advance

and I do appreciate the work you Devs are putting in!

I wish I knew where that prebuscent derp lived... I'd come over and bully his sorry acne infested face around for a few hours before I shoved his head into the toilet and flushed it... then shove him into a locker and put insinuating comments on his locker door in lipstick... pink lipstick...

then again...

he probably just needs a hug.... you'd be surprised what people do when they lack that one little human interaction in their daily lives.

I don't know much about how this kind of thing happens. I would be grateful if someone, preferably someone who actually knows something about computers and the internet rather than speculative rubbish, could answer the following questions for me? I'm interested to know.

1. Why can't these people be traced/arrested?

2. These people clearly crave attention: why has Twitter not shut down their Twitter account/been forced to shut it down? It's there for everyone to see for christ sake and they've been posting for ages on it.

Thanks

DDoS is basically a denial of service attack.

Tranquillity has a static ip# which we all connect to, kind of like a telephone number. As you play the game small amounts of data bounce back and forth between you and the server.

When someone DDoS's something they spam the ip# of the server with a large amount of data which it has problems processing, which in turn stops other "packets" from getting through. This ultimately stops everyone from connecting.

Semi drunk think that makes sense

Please don't. I don't want another round of media frenzy over video game violence.

Think of it like a party, and there suddenly is a whole load of people banging on the door going "Hai, can I come in?", and you have to check the ID of everyone who goes in, and they can only go in a few people at a time.
This would soon overwhelm your poor doorman, and you would end up with one of those parties like you read about in the paper, where 500000000000 people suddenly crash a party cos someone put it on public facebook, or, if your doorman is smart, he will just close the door and let no one in. This affects both genuine partygoers and the gatecrashers.

Say since Somer did/does RMT and they have users in Texas
Can it be said that the damages caused by this DDOS constitute a terrorist action under § 22.07

My understanding is that someone has already traced them and publicly posted all their details. So they have been traced.

Thanks

Shutting it down wouldn't accomplish anything beyond telling them that the police are definitely interested.

Leaving it up gives them more time to say something that makes things worse for them.

Made the best of it and it worked out great for me, logged in via .exe into a region that looked like a ghost town.

Took a Viator and picked up a bunch of high isk stuff bought cheap on buy orders in 3 different low sec systems that are usually camped. Twisted

Good job getting it back up CCP and death to hacker scum!

So, is there anything CCP can do to defend against this attack, or do we all have to hope derp just stops out of kindness? If the attack continues indefinitely, aren't we all offline indefinitely?

There have been unconfirmed reports of data theft (personal information). Can you confirm that this is being looked into/not an issue?

Thanks!
