CCP please make it happen, it makes sorting out items better so you can see with a glance what meta level an item is.
Maybe something like a smal "Mt 4" in the corner of the icon

Edit
Whoops... sorry in the wrong forums

This definitely needs to happen. It is particularly overwhelming for new players trying to learn how to fit their first ships because there are so many items to choose from. If there was an easier way to see the relative power of an item that would probably help a great deal.

Rubbish.

It's called learning 2 play.

EVE is often described as a complex game. Complexity can be good in some cases, the myriad fleet compositions, ship fittings, and pvp tactics being examples. However complexity can also take the form of tedious memorization, and this is one of those cases. The first type of complexity is a positive and should be celebrated, but the second type which the OP mentioned, is tedium, and should be simplified.

If you switch your container to detail view, you can add a meta column which shows this information.

(Not as nice as an overlay on the icon, but you can at least sort your container by meta item level now.)

True that can help a lot to determine the quality of items you already have, but for new players it would be much easier to see the meta level directly on the market. I just introduced a friend to eve and realized once more this is a very serious issue for new players.

Or, just remove Meta Level from the attributes list...

Something else than needs to be clearer is the 'Compare' feature. It's currently hidden away on the Variations tab when you show info on an item. It needs to be far more prominent.

The Compare tool should also be able to be used to compare ships that aren't variations on the same hull. Currently, you can compare a Thorax to a Phobos (what use is that?) but you can't directly compare a Phobos to a Devoter.
