could someone please explain the correct way to speed tank? is it just a case of picking an object and orbiting it at an increased speed while shooting target's?

Against...

Missiles = max speed any direction
Turrets = max speed perpendicular to incoming fire

That's a tracking calculator and some information about NPC rats which you can use to work out their tracking against you.

First rule of speed tanking:

Speed tanking works usually better with Afterburner because it does not raise your signature. Exceptions are ships which have a Microwarpdrive signature reduction bonus like Interceptors, Assault Frigates, or Heavy Assault Cruisers.

Second rule of speed tanking:
If you enemy is using missiles then you just fly in one generic direction with highest possible speed to speed tank the missile damage.
If you enemy is using turrets, then you should orbit him at close range to avoid being hit. Works best if you only have one enemy or the enemies are close together.

ok thanks for the replies, sounds a bit more complicated than i thought.

so if you have a ship with a targeting range of 100km and your missiles have a flight range of 60km and your enemy is using turrets, would you still orbit at close range?

and if the enemy is using missiles agaist you i guess your flying away from him and the incoming missiles?

Speed tanking and range tanking are different things. Speed tanking is more powerful the closer you are to enemy (watch out for webifiers and scramblers though). Range tanking is more powerful the further away you are.

In PVE range tanking > speed tanking when it does not affect your dps, though your missile volley counting will get out of hand so that can be an exception.

In PVP range tanking is only really viable when you know you can prevent your enemy from warping away either by having for example enough alpha to surprise kill him, or by a long point/bubbles, or by friends, or by ~~masterful psychology (read: the enemy is bad)~~.

Just remember to stay outside web range.

Fast missile ships do use exaclty that tactic, because their weapons ignore your own speed, If you are usign turrets you will hamper your own tracking as much as the enemy tracking.

That is the main advantage of missiles that so many whinners are unable to perceive.
